Syracuse Tailgate and Visitors Guide

Tigers
I did an extensive grouping of tailgate and visitors guides for Big East and several other schools. I took a break last year with realignment.
With you guys coming up to Syracuse I figure I'll share some info with you. The guide is just starting to get reviewed and updated. Most of the info is still good. Probably most important to you is there are two new hotels downtown (about a mile from the Dome) that you should check out. They are opening pretty soon. They are a Residence Inn and Courtyard Inn (Marriott brands).

I'll check in over the next few days to answer any questions. Feel free to share on the other Clemson forums.

It's a safe medium sized city with a college town atmosphere. It will be a cool away game and you don't have to worry about weather.

Well there are areas after dark you want to avoid...but if you'll figure it out pretty quickly. The city has some gang issues but no more than any medium sized metro area.

I had to laugh about the mugger at Syracuse. My husband was the GM for the Renaissance Hotel that is now a Crown Plaza located about a mile from the stadium. He was a resident of Syracuse for about 18 months, having moved from Asheville, NC, and I will tell you "he loved Syracuse". The people are very friendly...the town is very safe...no muggers...and the area has some of the most beautiful rolling hills that I have seen. This town is the opposite of what NYCity is and the people in Syracuse do not like to be put in the same catagory. This is going to be a awesome experience for our team...their fans...and a lot of them...love their team the Cuse... They wear their sports gear and talk only about college sports...not the pros. I think all of you will be in for a nice surpise. I plan on making the trip up and reconnecting with old friends I made while my husband was there...

The Crown Plaza is an awesome hotel...probably the best one if you want to be in between the Dome and Downtown. Hint: If you go to hotels.com and bid on a blind property in the University area 3.5 stars and above...you can usually score the Crown Plaza for around $85 a night.

RV parking on campus at Skytop...only the night before.
Many areas to RV in and around Syracuse. If you like gambling...about 30 miles east is Turning Stone. Also world class golf there.
If you are a sportsman...the Salmon will start to run at that time...I would look north about 30 miles to around Pulaski. The Finger Lakes is good too (30-50 miles west) for RV'ing and winery tours. Finally, Cooperstown is about 65 miles east and not to be missed if you are a baseball fan.
Syracuse is 240 miles NW of NYC...Central NY (the area around Syracuse) is not like NYC at all. Slower paced and more down to earth folks.
Finally if you never have seen Niagara Falls or visited Canada...they are nearby. You need a passport though.

Tell me about it...my summer home is about 20 mins from Canada. If you don't head to Niagara Falls and Toronto...head 90 miles north to the 1000 Islands and Kingston, Ontario. Awesome City, very British. The weather in mid-September is usually excellent. Highs in the mid 70s lows mid 50s...the water is still warm enough to swim. The first cold front of the season bringing high temps in 50s usually doesn't arrive until late Sept.

Niagara Falls is great for about 2 hours, unless you hit the casinos which will expend considerably more of your time Or if you take a boat trip underneath the Falls. That might actually be pretty awesome in September (assuming we play there in September). But I've been to the Falls twice and just standing there and watching the waterfall is only about a 20-minute visit. Going into Niagara itself is not unlike visiting the strip at Myrtle Beach. Lots of chintzy souvenir stores and restaurants, lots of neon signs and advertisements...it looks almost kind of trashy (hence the reference to Myrtle Beach).
Toronto, however, would be a fantastic trip. IIRC it's a 4-5 hour trip, depending on how backed up the border crossing is.

It's not the Canadians

US residents don't legally need a passport to get into Canada; however you do need one to get OUT of Canada back into the US. As a courtesy, Canadian border patrol officers generally will refuse you entry if you don't have a way to get back in. As far as I can tell the passport requirements really annoy Canada, but the US doesn't really seem to care.
To that effect you need either a full passport or a "passport card." Passport cards are only good for land and sea entrances back into the US from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, or the Caribbean. Passport cards are cheaper, but can't be used for air travel. They're generally meant for people who live near the Canadian/Mexican border and for people going on cruises, although any American can get one.

Why would anyone want to tailgate at Syracuse? Just go to a bar, lunch or dinner. Way too far to drive anyway and who want to tailgate in a rental car?

If the game is in Mid Sept...I expect to be there...my tailgate group is about 50 strong...we can host some of you guys. You'll get to try the Hofmann Coney.

Hey guys Cuse fan here again. I'll be up in Syracuse for this game. I'll answer any questions you have about lodging, eating, tailgating, tickets, etc..
Cuse Nation is very excited to join the ACC...many of us have been waiting since 1990 for this to happen.

Hey we have one about a mile from the stadium...I'll tell the manger you're coming.
When Syracuse: Italian is the way. Great Pizza, Wings and Seafood too (no catfish up there but haddock and clams).
I suggest Delmonico's for the big appetite.

Moons over My Hammie
Apr 30, 2013, 5:33 PM
[ in reply to Re: Syracuse Tailgate and Visitors Guide ] |
|
Boeheim mentioned going to a Denny's when he was in Clemson next season. If a revered man as he is calling out Denny's then I'm thinking Denny's must have their flagships stores all across Syracuse or at least near Carrier Circle where I'll be at the Red Roof. I'm going to have "Moons over My Hammie" three times a day.
Full disclosure: I was pulling for the Orange in the final 4. And yes, I did stay at the Red Roof near Carrier Cirlce (I think that is what it is called) back during my internal audit days right after graduation.
I liked the parts of Syracuse I've seen but liked it much mroe in summer than winter.
