New and improved how to watch 360 guide

Sep 20, 2008, 12:36 PM

Here it goes again. I've revised my instructions so hopefully they will be clearer.

First things first, if you have never used ESPN360, download the plug-in here (It
will save you trouble later) Note that this is the Internet Explorer Plug-in link.
http://player.movenetworks.com/pub/D0295F3F/MoveMediaPlayer_07103010.exe

Other plug-ins can be downloaded from here (Firefox, Mac Safari and Firefox):
http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/espn360/faq#7

1.) Go to this address. http://fall.cs.princeton.edu/codeen/ It is a list of free proxy
servers that are on the .EDU domain. Note that the status messages are generally
worthless. I just sort the list by clicking on Total under the Users header on the right
hand side of the list and just go down the list until you find one that works. Try to
pick one that doesn't have a country code like .br or .de at the end, etc. because it
will be slower.

2.) Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools-> Internet Options->Connections Tab-
>LAN Settings and check the box "Use a Proxy Server for your LAN".

3.) Enter an IP address from the list and a port. The ports are always going to be
3128, 3127, or 3124(unless it says otherwise on the list). The one I've had success
with is 128.238.88.64 port 3128. If a particular server doesn't work, pick another
one from the list in step #1. Click OK, and then click OK again to get back to Internet
Explorer.

4.) Test the proxy server by going to http://ipchicken.com/. Sometimes you will see
a CoDeeN splash page, but it will redirect you shortly. You will see under
Advanced, a line that says Name Address. If you are on the proxy server it should
be a different ISP than your usual ISP. In the example above it is “Name Address:
planetlab1.poly.edu.” It should have an .EDU in it if you did it right.

5.) Go to ESPN360.com, if you did everything right up to this point you will see
"Congratulations! Your high speed internet service provider carries ESPN360.com."

6.) Click on the box that says "Launch Video Player". A new window will open up.

7.) Immediately hit ALT-TAB to switch back to other window of Internet explorer.
Go to Tools-> Internet Options->Connections Tab->LAN Settings and UNCHECK the
box "Use a Proxy Server for your LAN". Click OK, then Click OK again to get back to
internet explorer. Note: You can't turn this off until after you click Launch Video
Player because it won't work otherwise. Don’t wait for ESPN 360 to load before
turning this off.

8.) Switch back to the ESPN 360 window and it should continue to load and play using
your internet connection. You are no longer using a proxy server, so the video will
stream full speed. Full speed on ESPN360 is still choppy. It's not the greatest
sometimes.

9.) Don’t close the ESPN360 window or you will have to turn on the proxy again to
get back in.

10.) Enjoy!

One slight problem.....

Sep 20, 2008, 12:54 PM

If you switch the proxy off TO fast while the video player is loading, it will catch you as not having access.

Now, I got to the point of getting the video player up and running but when I click 'go live' or even watch replay, no video will load. Apparently I'm SOL unless someone knows why it's doing this.

Re: One slight problem.....

Hmm... I've never had this symptom. You could try turning the proxy back on , clicking the Launch Video Player box, and then turning it back off again.

In my experience, its just checks again initially when you click Launch Video Player, then if you switch it off after that it should be fine.

You could try downloading the firefox plugin and doing it in Firefox. Pretty much the same except you have to go into the Network preferences for Firefox and put the proxy in there.

I am watching 360 right now using this, so I know it works.

Thanks for the guide! Been trying for 2 hours to get it to work. Was waiting to turn off the proxy after it loaded.

One more thing to note. If you are having problems. Switch servers. These codeen servers like to cut you off after a very short period of use. I have no idea why. But you really only need a very short window anyhow. But I just experienced getting in but no video.

I used a different server, tested it again with ipchicken.com And then loaded ESPN360.com again and it worked.

Any idea how this would work on an Imac?

Sep 20, 2008, 1:20 PM

I couldn't get it to work for the Citadel game. Thanks for any help.

Re: Any idea how this would work on an Imac?

Sep 20, 2008, 1:25 PM

Same principle with macs. Download the safari plugin from the second link. Put the proxy in system preferences-network-airport or Ethernet depending on setup-advanced-proxies-manual-web proxy.

Turn it off as soon as espn 360 starts to load. Remember to hit ok and apply after making any changes. I'm using safari right now on my MacBook.

Sep 20, 2008, 1:42 PM

I must be an idiot. As soon as I plug the new IP into the Ethernet screen under Network, it says I'm no longer logged onto the internet. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Re: Any idea how this would work on an Imac?

Sep 20, 2008, 1:49 PM

where are you putting in the ip? You have to do it under Web Proxy, no other place.

Re: Any idea how this would work on an Imac?

Sep 20, 2008, 1:52 PM

I'm not doing it right, then. I've been going to System Preference>Network>Ethernet screen

Can you show me which path to take again?

Thanks for all of your help.

Sep 20, 2008, 1:41 PM

ago and not working today. Just so other ppl don't feel alone. Everything works great until the pop up window comes up and then it says ESPN360.com loading for infinity. That's after immediately turning off the proxy. Oh well worth an hour of trying.

You're welcome. I'm glad to help my fellow Clemson fans watch the tigers play. Still makes no sense to me why ESPN doesn't put these games on Gameplan. Hopefully this one will be the last game of the season we have to use 360.
