This will probably just open up another can of worms...(vid)

Sep 12, 2006, 5:38 PM

but for those of you who think the refs didn't have anythign to do with the outcome of the game... here's a hand full of plays that say otherwise.

All this really did for me is make me realize how much closer we were to victory than the game made me feel on Saturday.

I personally don't think anyone of these plays truly cost us the game as we had so many opportunities to win; but, after getting all the emails and tmails I figured I'd put this together anyway.

A handful of questionable calls

The clear block in the back on the BC kickoff return

Sep 12, 2006, 5:45 PM

was one call (or no call as it were) that had a definite impact on the outcome of that game.

Sep 12, 2006, 6:08 PM [ in reply to The clear block in the back on the BC kickoff return ]

that was the ONLY one that resulted in direct points. The others all go on assumptions or more missed oppertunities. We also overcame that because we took the lead again.

I don't think I have seen anyone saying the refs were good...they are ACC refs after all. However, blaming the refs for the outcome of the game is just an excuse I expect to hear from coot fans and I wish we could be better than that.

Nonetheless, you're right, we still should have won the game.

My take on the officials

Sep 12, 2006, 5:49 PM

they will miss calls. that is part of the game and you have to be good enough to overcome them. one or two of those calls go our way we win, but either way we certainly had our chances.

My problem with people around here are that they blame the officals for everything. had we done what we should have, the officials would not have mattered in the outcome. As many calls as the crew missed, there is no chance in He!! that they sit around saying, "Let's see how we can screw those orange punks out of a win."

ALL IN!!

Re: My take on the officials

Sep 12, 2006, 6:02 PM [ in reply to My take on the officials ]

I'm sorry, but I can't buy the "refs will miss calls" argument. I mean, isn't that what instant replay is for??? So that the officials WON'T miss any calls?? If reviewing a play isn't gonna make any difference (as it did Saturday night), then why lengthen the game with pointless reviews? I don't know about anyone else, but I have better things to do than watch a bunch of clueless officials sit through pointless reviews.

GET IT RIGHT, ZEBRAS!!! THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE PAID TO DO!!! THAT'S WHAT REPLAY IS FOR!!! NO EXCUSES!!!

which was exactly why I did not, and still don't think we need instant replay! It has not, and will not, take the human out of a human game.

That't not an excuse. That is reality. We are not perfect.

What's the unacceptable amount of miss calls...

Sep 12, 2006, 6:22 PM

during a game a coach can take it up to with the league office to complain? Optimally one miss call is one bad call too much. I understand they have a tough job that is severly under appreciated and missed calls are part of the game. And I understand the refs aren't perfect when they have to deal with 250+ lbs guys zooming around at speeds most of us can't approach and the officials can't be everywhere and see everything at once. I'm not complaining about the refs or scapegoating them. But there's got to be a certain limit of calls they blow where their competence is called into question like the NC State game a few years ago.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All I can say is another fine hatchet job by Ron Cherry!***

Sep 12, 2006, 6:30 PM

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What else do you expect from Ron Cherry

Sep 12, 2006, 6:45 PM

Fact: Ron Cherry & crew are the worst officials in the ACC with more calls overturned than any other crew.

FACT: The ACC has the worst record of any major D1 conference when it comes to calls on the field being overturned on instant replay (per 2005 stats). ACC officiating crews had on field calls rewversed 50% of the time when instant replay rule was invoked.

Here's the rundown of BCS conference replay statistics for 2005 (numbers through last week):

ACC: 37 games - 30 replays - 15 overturned - 50.0%
Pac10: 30 games - 38 replays - 14 overturned - 36.8%
Big10: 37 games - 38 replays - 13 overturned - 34.2%
Big 12: 38 games - 39 replays - 13 overturned - 33.3%
Big East: 26 games - 27 replays - 9 overturned - 33.3%
SEC: 39 games - 27 replays - 8 overturned - 29.6%

Right on the money CU,I think the block in the back was one of the most blatent Ive ever seen, and the ref was right beside it.BC would have started on the 6 yd line instead of the td.How was that ever a reception when no one of the 3 players had control at all on the way down.I dont want to sound like Carolina but this was a grab your ankles called game ,we got no breaks and it wasnt evened up ever,I dont think the replay helps if they still get it wrong,We work too hard to have these idiots miss obvious fouls and make up phantom ones.I hope we just play so well sat. that it dont even matter if they screw it up.
