You know you went to Clemson a long time ago if.....

1. You got your head shaved and wore a Rat Hat to class the first month of college. 2. You remember the tin cans fondly. 3. You knew Dan Gentry. 4. You caught rides home from the little shelters in front of Sikes Hall, 5. You caught rides to Winthrop to meet a woman, any woman. 6. You think of the High Rise Dorms as 'new'. 7. You remember The Red Carpet and The Study Hall as the new bars in town. 8. You marched a lot on Bowman Field while never once considering a career in the military. 9. You remember when Saturday Classes ended. 10. Your class brought in more girls than all the previous classes combined. 11. The idea of not driving behind the library seems strange. 12. The "Y" seemed a decent place to play pool, catch a flick or swim. 13. Your first mandatory non-credit course was "slide-rule." 14. In your first computer class you used a lot of cables. 15.The phrase, "WILL NOT COMPILE," still makes you want to cry. 16. Your date wore a wool dress to HOMECOMING despite the fact it was the first week in October and the temperature at kickoff was 79. 17. The P-plant means something 18. You ever went to the Paris Theater. 19. Mrs. Maw wrote off a parking ticket for you. 20. Dean Coakley wrote off a stack of parking tickets for you. 21. Dean Cox yelled at you and reduced the fine on a large stack of parking tickets by 75%. 22. You matriculated in the auditorium at Tillman Hall. 23. You remember the candle-lit anti-war protests. 24. You remember streaking. 25. You remember the last rat class. 26. Hootie was a new coach while you were a student. 27. You remember Doug Kotar's kickoff returrn. And his death. 28. You saw Pistol Pete play in Littlejohn and grieved when he died. 29. You remember Frank Howard at basketball games. 30. You remember Frank McGuire at basketball games. 31. You know where Bobby Roberts coached BEFORE we hired him as basketball coach. 32. You liked the old baseball field a lot more than the new one. 33. You remember when 50,000 was a tremendous crowd at a football game. 34. You remember when the 'hippies' got arrested for playing frisbee on the hill during a football game. 35. You know where the doorknob to hell is. 36. You had a class on Saturday morning 37. You had to choose between Air Force or Army for ROTC. 38. You remember losing three straight to South Carolina. 39. Your first semester textbooks cost $68, total, new. 40. You burned off a bulletin board in the post office, or thought it was ok when someone else did. 41. You went to a concert in Harcomb Commons 42. You did "Dan's duty" 43. You're still mad the loggia was closed in 44. Your date stayed at the Smartest Hotel in South Carolina 45. You knew how to sneak up the back stairs at the Clemson House 46. A guy you knew at school was killed in Viet Nam 47. You remember the first draft lottery 48. You knew Frank Howard 49. You remember the first Danny Ford Coaches show 50 The National Championship Year seems like yesterday.
I am an old Tiger.

You are old !!!
It sounds like I might have a year or two on you, though. I escaped in '72.
Those were good years - even though we didn't have much luck in sports. I was able to marry a Winthrop girl.

I was in the RM Cooper Library one night and saw this

I was on the 2nd floor studying at a table near the back. Somebody had written on it something about Strom Thurmond and another guy had written something about how he was old and about to die and then had signed his name and a date of 1984. I got a little chuckle as I sat there in 1999 with Strom still alive.

If your freshman year there were a few coeds (Gasp) on campus, If the Tiger Band added their first two majorettes, If the unthinkable happened and we lost to the chickens, freshmen were supposed to continue wearing rat caps until Christmas break

I remember the Kotar KO return pretty vividly. New year. New enthusiasm. High hopes. It was a gorgeous day. Football season was about to start.
BAM....Doug Kotar takes the opening KO back for a TD. Sort of let the air out of the balloon.
Was it 1970 when Kelly had all those interceptions and all that intercept return yardage?

... defensive back in 1970 and had long interception returns against Duke and Maryland. I think he ran a punt back at Maryland as well. Don roomed with my brother, and I see him occasionally at Clemson events. Given the "Kotar" disaster, we did come back and beat the chickens in Columbia in the last game!!
My brother commandered the Clemson football highlights from 1969, 1970, and 1971 a few years ago, and he distributed copies around to several of our teammates from those days. Just last week I watched them with one of my co-workers over a couple of lunch breaks. Things were a lot different back then.
