With all this "Why not us?" talk, let's compare...
Apr 13, 2005, 3:23 PM
|
|
The difference between the Boston Red Sox Baseball teams and Univ. of South Carolina football teams…
Let’s review the situation. The Curses:
Red Sox: Babe Ruth is sold to the New York Yankees thus beginning and 80+ year long World Series Championship drought.
SC: Former S.C. Gov. Ben Tillman, placed a hex on USC after his suggestion to make the school an agricultural and military institute was turned down. Tillman said any USC team would suffer athletic mediocrity, and would always come in second to Clemson University.
Over the years…
Red Sox: Until last season, the Boston Red Sox hadn’t won a World Series title since 1918…
SC: Has NEVER won a national title!
Red Sox: Including 1918, the Red Sox had won 5 World Series… and since 1918 the Red Sox have played in 4 World Series and 6 AL Championship Series…
SC: Since the existance of the program has NEVER competed in a national title game and NEVER competed in a championship game. With the lone exception of 1984, USC has never had a season in which they went undefeated or have won 10 games or more.
Red Sox: Always have been a decent to good team struggling to get over the hump year after year with only a few obstacles… the New York Yankees but mostly themselves.
SC: Has only had one 10 win season ever and, count’em, 52 losing seasons. To get over the hump, you must first reach the hump. The only thing that stands in SC’s way is the rest of the SEC, Clemson and occasionally Navy.
Finally, the “Why not us?” catch phrase…
Red Sox: Coined the phrase “Why not us?” but have also always been on the brink of success. In 2004 they got over the hump.
SC: Using the now famous catch phrase; but, on the other hand... See for yourself
Conclusion
While the 2004 Red Sox were a lovable fan favorite team of “idiots”; and, used “Why not us?” To achieve the unattainable for the first time in over 80 years... SC is just a bunch of idiots.
Sorry Babe, but you ain’t got nothing on Ben Tillman.

They have gotten two things
Apr 13, 2005, 3:38 PM
|
|
1. easy exit after halftime from Death Valley South (sometimes known as Willie Brice) during the last November game every other year.
2. 23 straight years of the PRE-season National Champs title. 23 straight years of going in number 1 has a bunch of pressure associated with it.

FSU) worse records than us...they obviously have been much worse on many occasions. And that was my point, they were bad, real bad, and haven't been more recently. Which just goes to show, a school's past lack of success is not a good indicator of it future success, or visa versa for that matter.

Athletic mediocrity? and always coming in 2nd to
Apr 13, 2005, 3:54 PM

Clemson in athletics? Can someone please remind me what happened in the College World Series in 2002. Two blowouts in a row to Clemson? yep sounds like a pretty stiff curse. Also see basketball. I don't see where we're cursed. Currently we're in the top 10 in baseball, just one a good tournament in basketball (not the NCAA but still a pretty tough tournament as you may have found out against A&M) and also we're headed in the right direction with football (see the preseason top 25 that came out last month) I never felt we had a curse because im not really supersticious, however, if we had a curse it must have ended along with the 20th century because so far in the 21st century our athletic program is on the right track, especially in baseball.

I guess that because you "one" the NIT, it's a legit national championship for all to worship. Keep thinkin' that...
The only program you guys have is baseball and it's definitely your best bet to win that just out of reach national championship that people will respect.
