Once upon a time...

Jun 13, 2007, 9:48 AM

there was an evil kingdom in Columbia. This kingdom had a college where all the "uppity" folks went.

Many of the people outside the kingdom saw the school and the snobs who went to it and thought, "We should start our own school."

After several years, another school, an agricultural school was established. It was a school that met the need of the common people of South Carolina.

When the folks in the evil kingdom saw the new school, they laughed and laughed and made fun of the small school. The new school called themselves the Tigers. Thinking it would be funny, the Columbia school began calling them "Taters" because they considered them to be just a farm school.

Soon the schools began playing football. The Columbia school thought they were tough. They called themselves "Gamecocks" because they thought these were tough birds that fought to the death.

After 104 games of football, the Tigers have beaten the Gamecocks 63 times, making the so called rivalry an embarrassment to the high and mighty evil kingdom in Columbia. The Tigers now call the Gamecocks the "Coots," because these birds - small, dumb birds that look a little like duck and at times appear to be aggressive and make a lot of noise, but fly away in the face of real danger...and the sight of the cops.

And the Taters lived happily ever after...

In the early days of the internet

Jun 13, 2007, 12:05 PM

there was one Clemson site, Tigernet and one South Carolina site, FGF. There were no passwords and we just posted under whatever name you wanted to. There was a lot more crossover, people posting on both boards.

The gamecocks came up with "tater" meaning potato, because we are an agriculture school.

Someone on Tigerboard came up with coot, a stupid flightless bird, and it stuck. Slowly, they went from being "chickens" to "coots."
