Spurrier to redshirt?

The Sun News
Monday, September 25, 2006
STEVE ERWING

COLUMBIA, SC -- Sources close to the USC athletic department revealed today that the University of South Carolina has asked for and received permission from the NCAA to redshirt head football coach Steve Spurrier for this year.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, report that Spurrier has met twice with Gamecock athletic director Eric Hyman over the last three weeks, and is content with his decision to sit out this year.

Reportedly, Spurrier has struggled all year long with an undermanned offensive line and, most importantly, terrible decision making at the QB position. As a result, he has suffered from stress at the thought of trying to actually watch this team perform the rest of the season.

According to the quoted sources, Spurrier's condition had not gone unnoticed and he applied for a medical redshirt to sit out the year after meeting with his family psychiatrist. A more formal announcement will be made at his weekly call-on show on Thursday, September 28th.

Spurrier's condition is said to be acute. "He feels he can't win any more than one or two more games the rest of the year and even at Duke he has never seen such poor performance and execution. He feels it's best to sit out the year so this won't count against his overall coaching record."

"He can redshirt himself, Smelley and Thind and he feels that with foundation they can win a consistent 5-7 games a year for many years to come."

Secondary coach and assistant head coah, Ron Cooper would take over the head coaching duties for the remainder of the season.

University of South Carolina atheletic director, Eric Hyman, declined to comment on the report.
