Sunday morning sermon....(long of course)

Sep 11, 2005, 7:08 AM

"Oh Lord! How long shall I cry out, yet you do not hear?"

That wasn't a quote from Tiger fans at the end of the third quarter Saturday, but it well could have been. It was the prophet Habakkuk, a vexed and perplexed soul wondering when the heck things were going to start going Israel's way.

The Lord, as always, had an answer: be patient. The answer is coming. If it seems to be overdue, just wait for it. It will not be late a single day.

Saturday the answer came for Tiger fans, late, but not at all overdue. It came not on the wings of angels nor the clatter of chariots, but on the sweet arm of Charlie Whitehurst, the rummbling wheels of Reggie Merriweather and the vengeance-is-mine brute power of Gaines Adams. It overwhelmed the haughty, the worshippers of Turtles and their high priest who had vexed the Clemson faithful for so long.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have the answer. We may still have some questions, but that's OK. The Almighty never said questioning was bad. Test your faith and prove it true.

And certainly that faith was tested in the third quarter yesterday. We couldn't move the ball, and we couldn't stop the Terps. We seemed powerless to stop Hollaback from picking us apart. It had all the ingredients of one of Herbstreit's recipes for a tent-folding disaster.

But disaster is not on the menu this year.

Instead, Spence began to outplay Grimace at his own game, coming up with the unexpected. And Koennig made some subtle shifts, unsealed the scroll and sent the destroyer into the Terp backfield. Suddenly the righteous had new life and the believers had proof that things may come late, but they never come over due.

The young warriors of Clemson have much to learn, and some of that learning will likely come with losses. But we have already learned one tremendous lesson in this early season....falling behind and quitting are two different paths.

And it's safe to say, early though we may be, that the second path is not one this team is going to take.

So, as fans, we have a fairly easy choice. When things go wrong, as they did in the third quarter yesterday, we can stand on the wall with the Habakkuks and Jeremiahs and Cassandras, weeping and moaning and whining.

Or we can climb off the wall and down in the trenches with our Tigers. We can give them the belief and the heart they deserve, sharing the victory and the defeat. We can be part of something great this year.

Granted, that means leaving the safety of the wall, where ego and heart are saved by distance. A person who won't face the fire will never be burned.

Nor will they be purified.

Come off the wall, Tigers. Come down to the field of battle. There are tasks we all need to take up.

Whining and doubting are not those tasks.

Sermon's over, pass the plate.
