Is recycling worth the effort?

I heard that since we stopped paying China to dump it in the ocean, US recycling plants are overwhelmed and most of it ends up in the landfill anyway
Maybe NASA is working on a way to jettison it to the sun ... since they’ve forgotten how to land on the moon

Is it much “effort?” Plenty of people make money on it.

Doesn’t take extra effort on my end. So I’m ok with it.

that some of you guys (you know who you are) actually recycle or that you live in a neighborhood and not a compound.

No. Most of it these days is just a feel goody thing for

city/county councils do so they can get get re-elected.
Most (almost all in Oconee County) goes straight to the landfill.
When "feel good" is more expensive than cost savings, the calculus changes.

we live on a planet with finite resources under an economic model that requires infinite and exponential growth in consumption in order to sustain itself. You do the math.

We in the US can do the recycling and everything but until the rest of the world is on board then it is a waste of time. Look @ the plastic trash in Brazil and China it is unbelievable.

Most of stuff with put in our home recycle bins do NOT go to a recycle plant. Some does but most does not. China quit buying our raw recycled materials because it was not separated properly or in the case of paper was ruined by water.

So, my little mini rant on this...
Dec 10, 2020, 2:45 PM
|
|
A while back, I had a friend give us #### when she came over to our house for a party because we didn't recycle. I pointed out that it cost money to recycle. She didn't like that. Perhaps I'm a jack ###, but I don't believe in adding another monthly bill that requires me to separate my garbage and haul something new down to the curb.
If the county wants me to recycle, don't ask me to pay for a service (yeah, I know, it would probably go into taxes anyway) and do more work.

Finally something we can agree on.

We didn't recycle in Richmond (Henrico County) because of the same reason. I refused to pay for the pleasure of doing more work.

I think it is definitely worth it if all of the materials are being effectively recycled. I think there should be some investigation about where all of this stuff is really going - and some incentives provided to help make recycling profitable.

We have no rocket even closely capable of reaching the SUN
Dec 11, 2020, 9:48 AM

The best we have done is get a small satellite 3.8 million miles away after using Venus a few times to help. This was on the most powerful rocket we have right now with 3 stages. (Parker Solar Probe)
It is hard to get to the Sun because we are traveling around the sun at 67,000 mph so to have something fall into the sun you have to slow it down by 67,000 mph with not a lot of planets to slingshot.
One design is to use Jupiter's mass to slingshot and slow down, but that is a lot of traveling to do.
