Tiger closed some ground on Jack today

not in Major victories (still 18-14 Jack).......
but in Major 2nd place finishes (Jack had 19, Tiger now is within 12 as this was his 7th time as runner-up).

Phil has 11

Mickelson has finished second in a major 11 times, including the 2016 Open Championship, second only to Jack Nicklaus, who was second 19 times. Of course, Jack also had 18 wins, while Mickelson has five major championships on his resume.
Mickelson also has 23 top-3 finishes in his career. Only Nicklaus (46) and Tiger Woods (24) have more. But while 56% of Nicklaus' top-3s were wins and 67% for Woods, only 22% of Mickelson's top-3s have been wins. That is the lowest rate among all golfers with at least five wins in golf's majors.

That chart is a little whacky.
So 3rd place counts as a “loss”, but 4th thru 50th is disregarded.
FAKE NEWS!!

Jack is probably the most overrated athlete of all time. The game has come so far. Jack would probably have no majors in this era.

You can say the same for a lot of athletes

but I disagree unless you are going to make him play with the same clubs and balls from his era.

You can’t compare eras. Jack is the greatest in how

he dominated his era.
Of course if you take Jack or MJ or Babe Ruth from their era and put them with today’s players they wouldn’t be as successful.

I think The Bambino would achieve the closest to his success regardless of era. With MJ in 2nd.
Jack was fortunate to be the Tiger of his era and there was probably only 2 or 3 that could come close. Even more so with Bobby Jones. Golf used to be a game only for the Aristocracy (loosely used)
But Babe Ruth would still be hammering homers regardless of the pitcher or the era. So too would have Hammerin Hank Aaron.

I think Ruth would have less success than the other two.

He wasn’t in any great physical shape and was just, fat.

You don’t have to run fast when you hit homers.....

And, do you think they were only throwing 70 mile per hour fast balls in Ruth’s time? Surely you don’t. Baseball is the only 1 of those 3 sports where the level of competition, at least pitcher versus batter hasn’t changed much, if any.
I think Jack would have competed and won many, but because of Tiger, golf has 20 players that can win on any given weekend.
MJ would have great success no doubt when he would’ve played.

Kind of like people saying Shaq, Kareem, or Wilt are close to the best athletes of all time. They were just bigger. If you go by athletic ability, Allen Iverson is a way better athlete.
