Those probably were cars imported. Ford just the first to mass produce... But after the civil war, horseless carriages started to become more popular. In fact, I think Ford developed a car in the 80's... So it's highly possible with the wealth in that area.
What's telling to me about it is Clemson fans are still the same 125 years later. Mixture of us non edumacated dirt diggers and the snoody alumni who think they're the only true Clemson fans.

Automobiles in 1896 were literally a horseless carriage. A couple of those look like Oakland’s, must have been a dealer nearby.

It is a great field! Lots of history and tradition have crossed that turf to bring honor to Clemson, in spite of the fact the guys lost the game that day, 20-13 to Furman. Must have been an exciting game to watch. Thank you for sharing.
