I think the bigger issue is, compared to other aquatics facilities in the league and throughout the southeast, Fike needs to be significantly upgraded, and the University simply doesn't want to allocate the money.

The university looks for places to build new, not fix old.
No pool, no need to keep that side of the building, someone will say cheaper to build new Fike somewhere else, than renovate old Fike. Demo old Fike, and build the new Boeing School of Aeronautics or McGillycuddy School of Post Historical Studies.
Surprised Lot 1 has lasted this long.

Pool aside and my opinion only: Fike’s been too crowded for years. Someone told me that compared to other schools in the ACC and SEC, our exercise facilities are among the smallest per capita. Not sure if that’s true, just what I was told.
I thought they would build a decent 2nd gym in the Douthit complex, but the students I spoke with said it’s mostly cardio with little to no weights. I think they missed an opportunity there.

(1972!) Things sure don't last like they used to.
(They also opened the bowling alley in the Student Union my sophomore year, and now it is being (or already is) torn down.)

It'll be about the safety of our children, turtles & potable water.

Make it available for Baptisms. That might attract some funding.

I wish but the football program must be penalized for it, also the majority of the football earned revenue should be distributed evenly among the other parasitical women & men's sports-which is pretty much all of them
