I think maybe the radicals leading the left will eventually start in on the rest of America's history.

why it would be perceived as a bad quote. He didn't say (in that quote) that he didn't want to free slaves, or that he didn't care about slaves. He's just talking about how important it was for him to preserve the Union.

My heritage is defined by ...
Admiration for our beaches, mountains, lakes and rivers
State and National parks and forests
Boating, fishing and hunting
Music from bluegrass, gospel, southern rock to country
BBQ, Fried chicken, oyster roasts to shrimp boils
College football on Saturdays preceded by unparalleled tailgating
Cold beer and good bourbon
Wonderful cities like Charleston, Asheville and Savannah
Great golf courses
Great American patriots from the Revolutionary War, to WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq / Afghanistan. Our military heritage is not limited or defined by the Civil War

I'm southern, born and raised, and never want to live anywhere else, for most of those reasons you mentioned.

I also consider the Confederacy to be a disgusting institution that deserves zero honor of any kind, anywhere. The Confederate flag was waved by traitors to America, led by men whose main desire was to keep people they considered sub-human as slaves, and they lost, thank God.
