On a free kick after a safety

Posted: Nov 2, 2020, 10:31 AM

Is there anything that would prevent a punt into the air past ten yards with hang time allowing the kicking team to block the other team out of the way and then enable the kicking team to catch the ball and run in for a touchdown.

If you fair catch the kick after a safety, is the ball placed back at the 25 like a normal kickoff?

I wonder if punt rules or kickoff rules apply when the team

chooses to punt after a safety. Fumbled punts cannot be advanced by the kicking team and they also can't be recovered unless the opposing team touches the ball first. It's a completely different rule set.

It's a kickoff and not a punt in terms of recovering the ball, but the fair catch rule still applies as mentioned above.

The rule of not being able to advance the ball if recovered by the kicking team also applies. The only way for the kicking team to advance a recovered ball is if it was first possessed by the return team and then fumbled.
