Well, two years in a row we have to sit and watch a team

come through Clemson. Anyone who thinks this is progress isn't watching the games. We're pumping up a coach who can have a team good enough to be top-16 two years in a row, but can't win at home in the postseason. If your team is good enough to win 40+ games, then they're good enough to make a Super. Bottom line. At the end of the day, 42-20 losing at home in the Regional is no different than Leggett's 35-25 and going 0-2. Not advancing is not advancing no matter how you dice it.
Idk why we expect this team to be focused and play with fire when you have a HC that doesn't even argue the call at the plate. If you want players to play with passions, then coach with some Monte.

Because if you think Monte's types of teams are the same that Leggett coached and got beat by LIBERTY...TWICE in a regional, then you are just plain stupid.

and not advancing versus being a #3 seed and going 0-2? Honestly, if you think there's a big difference then you're beating your chest over have a prettier single-round postseason. Either way, you fail to make a Super which should be the standard.

Baseball is all about the postseason. Nothing else matters. It's not CFB where you get pretty bowl games and all that. You play the whole season for seeding in the Regionals. That's where your seasons are validated. Bottom line, we've not done anything that matters in the last two years because we can't advance.

By your point though that means that Monte's teams were better than any Jack coached since 2010. We didn't advance past regional play but they played the whole season and had better seeding in the regionals.
We've got a lot of young talent on this team and we will be fine.

It only matters what you did with your seeding is my point. Monte's REGULAR SEASONS blow anything Leggett did out of the water since '09 when we hosted. Even in '10 we were a #2 @ Auburn. But to my point, you brought up '10 because nobody cares what happened in the regular season (so long we made a Regional). All everyone remembers is the CWS appearance which made it a special season.

You keep switching your point, the fact of the matter is that the past two seasons have been better than anything since 2010. Period. End of story.
Therefore your bitching about Monte is misplaced, and quite frankly, idiotic.

My point is that the regular season doesnt matter if you dont capitalize on the advantage it gives you in the postseason. The reason '10 is better than anything we've done the last two seasons is because of the postseason run we had. Nobody cares that we were a 2-seed that had a good regular season, but not a great one. The POSTSEASON made that year great. If you dont win in the postseason then what have you accomplished. Go ask TTU, UNC, Stanford, Arkansas if they feel good about the seasons they had, losing at home in Regionals. Go ask Davidson, Vandy, Sam Houston, etc. if they think this season is special.

If that doesn't matter then where were you last week when EVERYONE WAS BITCHING ABOUT NOT HOSTING A REGIONAL?
Also, by your logic I don't need to ask Davidson, Vandy, Same Houston, etc. if the season is special unless they make it to Omaha.
You keep making one point but then arguing another.

You made the point that making it to Omaha is all that matters, then bring up teams that have only won regionals. Their seasons aren't special yet, so why bring them up?
My point it we gave ourselves that chance, and it's better than not hosting.

I didnt say that Omaha was all that matters. I just said that '10 was the last season because we made it past a regional. Obviously a more special season than '09 where we made a Super.

Ffs dude you are spinning around so much you gotta be dizzy. Is it making a Super that makes a season special, or making it to Omaha, or what?
Cause from what I gather, the regular season is only about seeding (check the box both years), but advancing is what is really important (don't check the box), but 2010 was so special due to Omaha, but that doesn't really matter it's about advancing to a Super?
It's been fun, but a long day and another tomorrow so I'm out before I get dumber by going back and forth with you.

You do know you have make a Super before you make Omaha right? '10 would've been better w/o Omaha had we lost to Bama at home just for the sole fact that we made it past a Regional. I think finishing the postseason top-16 is pretty special... maybe not back in the 2000s when the standard was Omaha, but right now it would be great.

Not if you dont do anything with it. My whole problem isnt missing on a Super again. If we were solid all year and were a 2 or 3 seed and lost like we have the last two years Id feel better about it and say that he needs time to recruit. My issue that we're good enough to go through a heck of a schedule and finish top-16 but we cant win a home regional. I dont get why we're good enough to host, but not good enough to win it. We're underachieving in the postseason because of the expectations that our regular seasons are setting. Again, either way its the same thing because you dont host, but I could be a little more patient if we werent that good to start with.

I am not convinced he will do anything. We just cant fire coaches every couple of years. It makes no sense on about 1000 different levels. He is dealing with the same issues Jack dealt with. He, for all practical purposes, has far less scholarships than most of the teams he has to compete against.

I wouldn't fire him now. I just don't get how every time people post upset by the coaching or how the team plays everyone just swears up and down that Monte is our savior and that he's dealing with so much from Leggett's leftovers. These leftovers have finished top-16 twice, top-8 once and he can't win with them. I just don't get why Monte is above reproach. When he's winning he's amazing, when we're losing it's Leggett's fault.

I'm sorry but this is a ridiculous post. The program is much better off now than it was in the last few years of the Leggett era. Monte has been here 2 years...only 2 years. He already won an ACC title with Jack's guys. You have to give him time to build this program back into the powerhouse it was and will be. Dabo didn't do it overnight either. I guess you were ready to fire him after going 6-7 in year #2, am I right? You obviously can't see the bigger picture.

Again, he can win in the regular season and get us a host in the toughest conference in America, but he cant win in the postseason. My issue here isnt that we're losing in the postseason, it's that we're good enough to host and still can't make it past a Regional. If the team were just average year round and a two or three seed then I would agree with rebuilding, but apparently there wasnt much to rebuild if theyre already good enough to finish top-16 two seasons in a row.

Relax, Monte is in his second year as our head coach.

He is coaching the third most popular sport on campus, and it is one that loses money every year. Sure, Clemson has a nice core of fans for baseball, but Monte has done well and he isn't going to be fired for hosting a regional two years in a row, with an ACC championship as well.

I would venture to say that baseball might be the second most popular sport on campus. It was for sure when I was there but that was when we had Harbin, Colvin, Demmick, etc. I remember walking into the first weekend in '06 and it was standing room only.

Baseball isn't even close to being the second most popular sport on campus.
Jun 5, 2017, 10:27 PM
|
|
Basketball has thousands more fans in attendance per game. It also has many more who watch on TV. Ticket revenue and apparel sales are also higher for basketball.
Clemson supports baseball well, and we have a nice core of fans who love baseball, but it isn't - and never has been - as popular as basketball at Clemson.
And of course, both pale in comparison to football.

I would think if we only played 15 games at home that we would sell as many tickets too at baseball.

a national championship in basketball or a national championship in baseball, which one do you think most would pick? I would bet that at least 75% would say basketball.

In the Nat'l landscape it's a bigger deal. I love baseball so much more than BB, but I would pick BB too just because it matters more. I dont know if thats an accurate barometer
