J.D. Davis

With today's news of Tre Lamar and Chad Smith likely too banged up to play this week, Tiger Nation's focus has shifted to who plays LB this weekend against the Gamecocks.
I took some time with the snap data available to try and lend a hand in answering. For 10 of Clemson's 11 we played mostly in our base 4-3 personnel. The only game we moved away from our base was against a much more spread oriented Syracuse team. Carolina runs a more pro-style offense, Hayden Hurst rarely leaves the field for the Gamecocks, (why would he? he's their best offensive player) and they often bring in an additional TE. I expect us to be playing three linebackers most of the night, and with Dorian O'Daniel and Kendall Joseph ready, we can cross off two of the LB spots. J.D. Davis has been the ranked top 4 at least in LB snaps each of the last 6 games we've been playing base personnel, dating back to Boston College excluding Syracuse. Last three weeks he has received 32, 55, and 33 snaps respectively. In those games he has logged 14 tackles and 1.5 TFLs and at least 1 tackle per game. Considering he has been coming in to spell other LBs, this production should increase with a full workload. He has been recording a tackle at a rate of 1 every 5.8 snaps. If he gets a snapload in the 40s we could easily see a 10 tackle game from him.
tl:dr I believe that J.D. Davis will be the main recipient of Tre Lamar's snaps and I believe he will be our most important player this week.

If we were playing Miami this week, they'd BOTH be playing.

JD's turned into a fine LB, but make no mistake about it, Dabo and BV have watched the putrid Chicken Offense film and decided to give these guys another week.

Not sure that’s the case at all for Tre.

It is a spinal injury he’s dealing with, hope we’re always erring on the side of caution there.

Be interesting to see how they divvy up the snaps.
Skalski definitely looked good against El Cid and he'll without question play a lot, wherever. JD has done OK but he's mostly an A-to-C-gap run-thumper and he doesn't have the wheels to run in coverage with the backs. AJ Turner does have speed and if they can get him out on screens and wheel routes that could be a problem.

I think O’Daniel can help there.

Also want to see him cover Shi Smith some while we stay heavy against the run. Like I mentioned above, Hurst scares me the most so I hope to see Muse matching up with his size.

JD will make you forget that he is aback up come Saturday. He has lead the team in tackles in a game this season. We are more than fine with JD in the line up. He has grown up hating the Gamecocks as much as any player on the team. I think we see a Ben Boulware type of performance from JD Saturday. GOOOOO!!!!! TIGERS!!!!!!

He's not good on the blitz. I'd much rather see Skalski.
