Clip on ties didn't exist that far back. They came in late 1950s. I was thankful for them when I was a Clemson student in the 1960s. I majored in textiles, and ties were required for all of our classes. Those clip on ties let me get to my 8 o'clock classes in Sirrine Hall aka The Textile Building by 8:05.

My favorite stadium story is about the sod and how slow it went till he promised ice cream at the end and the pace picked up considerably. From Clemsontigers.com ---- "Howard said that the seeding of the grass caused a few problems.
“About 40 people and I laid sod on the field,” he said. “After three weeks on July 15, we had only gotten about halfway through.
“I told them that it had taken us three weeks to get that far and I would give them three more weeks’ pay for however long it took to finish. I also told them we would have 50 gallons of ice cream when we got through.
“After that, it took them three days to do the rest of the field. Then we sat down in the middle of the field and ate up that whole 50 gallons.”
