and 5th largest overall in the world if on their own.
Let them do what they want....what happened to states' rights? Just like SC has the right to be ranked 44th in education.

out. Yep, let them be what they want. They won't last at this rate regardless of their economy. Education measure is also subjective. Doesn't really matter if all the states are preaching a liberal, clean-washed/altered history and agenda-based science.

44th in education based on what?

And the educational woes in our state have very little to do with what the schools are (or aren't) doing. It's on the parents.

but agree on the not banning books in so far as not white washing our history, yet explaining to children very bluntly where we came from. Banning Mark Twain is almost unheard of in my world.

Just banning books alone is absurd. And stupid because now all those kids will want to read them. Censorship never has the intended effect. But to ban these novels? Especially Huck Finn and TKAMB. What absolute imbeciles on that school board.
This isn't just a California problem, though. This has happened many times all over the country and in SC. Huck Finn, I believe, is the most banned book of the 20th century followed closely by Catcher in the Rye.
Censorship is dumb, especially in this Internet age. As this school board is quickly learning, I'm sure.

I get the uber PC 'hurt no feelings' stuff about Twain 'cause he used the "N" word, but Catcher in the Rye? What, are they worried mentally ill people will be offended?

Twain actually used that word as a slam on racists, but I guess I see what they're saying. Still, Twain's point in Huck Finn was to denounce racism.
As for Catcher, back in the day, people in authority who didn't understand literature thought it was more of a book encouraging teenage rebellion against society, not a commentary on mental illness. And John Lennon's assassination didn't help its case, sadly.

Huck Finn is one of the most banned books in America. I could not find a list of the schools that have banned it, but I assure you it is a long and geographically diverse list.
BTW, this article is about just one school district - not the entire state - so you might be letting your bias get the better of you there.
