On the onside kick......

Jan 15, 2016, 8:07 PM

With the kick angled toward the Clemson sideline, what would the penalty have been if a Clemson player came off the sideline and fielded the kick. It was obvious that Trevion didn't have a chance at it. Would it have been illegal participation? 15 yards and rekicked? Just curious.

That would have been brilliant.

I was thinking Trevion could have just shoved the player that was making the catch. Any penalty would have been a better outcome. Here's hoping that CU football never finds themselves falling victim to this play ever again. Most teams will probably learn from this as well.

I'm not sure the answer, but I have always wondered this.

Like if a player is running free and has a guaranteed TD and a player on the sidelines tackled hi.

I know high school and the NFL has the palpably unfair act

which basically leaves it up to the officials what the proper penalty would be if a player on the bench comes onto the field and interferes with play. Basically, if a WR has a 10 yard cushion and a bench player tackles him, they could award him with a TD. My guess is in this case, Alabama would be awarded the ball at the spot of the foul, if this is indeed a college rule as well.

PALPABLY UNFAIR ACT (NON-PLAYER)
Article 7 A non-player shall not commit any act which is palpably unfair.
Penalty: For a palpably unfair act, see 12-3-3. The Referee, after consulting the crew, shall make such ruling as he considers equitable (15-1-6 and Note). (Unsportsmanlike Conduct.)

Unfair Acts
ARTICLE 3. The following are unfair acts:

referee.
b. A team repeatedly commits fouls for which penalties can be enforced only
by halving the distance to its goal line.
c. An obviously unfair act not specifically covered by the rules occurs during
the game (A.R. 4-2-1-II and 9-2-3-I).

Trevion and #80 another freshman on the same side of the field should have signaled for fair catch as soon as the ball was in the air and it would have been a different outcome.

It wouldn't have mattered if they signaled for a fair catch because they were no where near close enough to be in position to catch the ball. You can't call a fair catch if you can't catch the ball, it doesn't work that way.

What we do know is whoever would have made the catch would have been fired on the spot. Dabo wouldn't put up with that nonsense.

I have never seen it applied but the referee does have ultimate power in the game. Even to award a score or give the ball to the kickoff team if in his judgement they would have recovered the ball.
