Ohio State fan trying to have a civil discussion about the game

Hey all,

I’m an Ohio State fan who wanted to reach out and attempt to have a civil discourse about the game. I see a lot of passion and hatred directed towards the Buckeyes. I personally have nothing against Clemson or Dabo Swinney. I think we are going to see 2 great programs battle it out on January 1st and I’m looking toward to it.

I wouldn’t be worried about our game with Ohio State if it weren’t for Nolan Turner having to sit out the first half. He’s not the best athlete on the D but he’s our QB of the secondary.

1) Have you ever visited the cities of Myrtle Beach, SC or Charleston, SC?

2) Will you be willing to marry a Yooper if it meant that your Buckeyes would win this game?

3) Are you able to admit that Justyn Ross did, in fact, not make the catch?

We'll start with those easy question first to see if a civil discussion can be had.

1. I have never been to South Carolina

2. I’m married to a girl from Michigan and she is far from a troll

3. Just my opinion.....but I definitely think it was a catch. The ball never moved in his hands and he took almost 4 full steps. That’s not why we lost the game tho. If Dobbins doesn’t drop 2 tds, we probably win. Not to mention the targeting on Wade (the correct call) and the terrible decision to come after the punt that resulted in a 15 yard penalty.

3. See Clemson vs WF game this year. Same call was made, pretty similar play (I'd want to say it happened near exactly how the play in the OH St game was)... But this time it was a WF player that fumbled it... Clemson scooped... And the school year also overturned. That one was called by ACC refs... With no "bias" that OH St fans think SEC refs had. So I'd say with 2 examples, you are incorrect.

4. Didn't want to mention the actual reason of losing? Justin Fields and his receiver not being in the same page, Fields throwing an interception in what could have been a game winning drive end of the game? Clemson had several drops too that would have been big ones... So those level out Dobbins....

Now to the game....I think Fields has issues a lot more against better defenses, and it probably doesn't serve you well that right now he's healing from a hurt thumb on his throwing hand.... That could cause pretty decent problems against the F+ #1 rated defense That is now back fully healthy, and just held the #1 F+ offense to 10 points, the only TD in that coming in the 4th quarter when backups were starting to get sprinkled in.

You are mostly right except for the catch/fumble/ scoop & score. Just about no one has really read the rule and could not figure out why the refs kept wanting to see the play in real time, not slow motion. There is no set number of steps that makes it a catch. What makes it a catch is having possession and making a move "common to the game" ...... some call it a football move, but nowhere in the rule book does it say "football move" (maybe splitting hairs). In real time he was not able to make a move "common to the game" ..... simple as that. No catch!

In OSU's game with NW, they had the same exact thing happened and no one of OSU's side thought it was a catch.

Dont mind some of these butt holes lol. You can have your own opinion about that play. I could have seen it going either way. I was surprised that they called it incomplete tbh. It is what it is though. Yall deff dont look as good as last year but Fields is still a star and OSU always has grade A talent.

Even after all that the game came down to 2 possessions. We took 4 plays and scored a td to take the lead. OSU threw a pick in the endzone with a chance to win.All I have heard is the refs cost OSU this game. Not true it was your offense lacking execution that cost you this game.

Hi,Buckeyejustvisiting, I don't mind having a civil discourse about our upcoming game. Thing is I really haven't see any of your games, and very little highlights, even on ESPN. So other than Justin Field, I know very little about your team.
The only thing I know is your team has been eyeing this rematch since last year. So New Years Day we will know the outcome.
Just so you know, if you do get the win, I will not be pulling or your team against the Alabama Notre Dame semifinal winner.
But don't feel bad, I won't be pulling for the winner of that game either.
I just won't watch, not caring who wins as I care nothing for any of the 3 teams in the CFP.

Our team is not as good as last year’s team in my opinion. The lack of games has really hurt our ability to get into a good rhythm. The secondary is nowhere near as good as last year and I think that will be our potential downfall. We lost Okudah and Annette (our 2 starting corners), along with Jordan Fuller (starting Safety). Perhaps the biggest difference is the change from Jeff Hafley to Kerry Coombs as or DB coach. Hafley had our dbs playing at an extremely high level that I haven’t seen this year.

Are we capable of rising up and winning this game? Yes we are. I just think there is a reason the line is what it is (Clemson -6.56), and that’s because Clemson looks like the better team to my eyes.

Do you think your team (offense and defense and special teams) and coaching staff are better or not quite as good as last year?

Do you think Clemson is better or not as good on offense and/or defense as last year?

Do you feel your short season has left your team with fresher legs and fewer injuries or less experienced and less playing time for young players to mature?

I feel like Ohio State is not as good as last year. Our offense is definitely missing JK Dobbins (although Trey Sermon balled out in the Big Ten title game) and Justin Fields has played like crap in our 2 biggest games (holds on to the ball way too #### long sometimes). Our receivers are very talented and should have success as long as Fields gets the ball into their hands
Our defense isn’t nearly as good as last year, but our front 7 is still very talented. We lost several key guys on defense and their replacements aren’t as good. Very concerned about our secondary against your uber talented receivers

I think coaching staffs are pretty similar to last year expect for Jeff Hafley no longer being or db coach (a big loss in my eyes).

From what I’ve seen of Clemson, they appear to be as good or better than they were last year. Amari and EJ are studs and will have success against our dbs and Trevor Lawrence is the best QB in America. The matchup I’m most looking forward to is our o-line vs your d-line.....strength against strength.

You guys have an excuse for everything under the sun. Look at your recruiting.. Y'all have just as many 5 stars on that roster as Alabama. The difference is, championship coaches DEVELOP athletes to be great. All y'all do is throw them out there and get pissed off when they don't perform. I mean look at your last three QB's careers after college football. Y'all just don't develop players over there. Think your front D-line is good? My guy.. just wait and see a real one new years day.

This year is a rebuilding year for OSU. Fields will get a lot more pressure on him than last year. I like Trevor’s matchup with the OSU secondary a lot. Clemson plays great red zone defense again. Our glaring weakness is the OL but they have been much improved since the ND loss and looked like a different unit last week. They performed really well against ND’s great defensive front. I like the Tigers going into this matchup a lot more so than last year.

Enjoy your stay here. Hopefully you recognize sarcasm and satire when you see it. Hopefully you’re not one of those guys that seriously gets mad about people having fun by talking trash on an internet message board about football. I’m ready to see these two great programs go at it again.

Merry Christmas to you and yours. Go Tigers!

I was at the game last year. Before the game, I talked to some of your fans at a bar. Very nice people. As far as the game this year... Clemson’s defense will look a lot different. Last year CBV had to change the defense to match the personnel that he had. This game you will see the return of the defensive war daddies up front. If Fields continues to hold on to the ball too long, he will have a very long night. This defensive front likes to eat early and often. Book can scramble with the best of them and was sacked six times last week. I am uncomfortable with Turner out the first half. Time will tell if OSU is able to exploit his absence. If the defensive front can keep the pressure on, hopefully Turner’s absence will not be so bad. On the flip side, the only hope that you have is to keep Lawrence off of the field. TL16 is going to shred your secondary. Once he does the shredding, Etienne will start getting his yards running. It is a pick your poison kind of situation. The one narrative that has been missing is the TL16 one. Trevor is not going to lose in the playoff. He has made it very clear that he remembers the game in New Orleans in January and he wants the title. Here’s to a clean, injury free game. And as a side note, please tell your fan base to lighten up when they visit our beaches. No one is forcing them to make the drive to SC. As soon as they see the paw, they can be an uptight bunch.

There isn’t a lot of hate toward OSU. We mock OSU, and laugh at the entitled Bucknut fans, but i would claim there is very little, if any, actual hate.

Towards the Ohioans that move to SC and never leave and never stop telling people they are from Ohio and how everything should be done like they do it in the place they fled, there could be actual hate.

Nice to know that an Ohio State fan wants to have a civil discussion, but I will have to disagree about a point you made. Most of the hate I have seen seems to be coming from Ohio State fans-hatred for Dabo and our program. Did you hear the obscene rant from Coach Day, by the way? I think it will be a great game. Too many of my Tiger colleagues expect a cakewalk, but I have respect for the Buckeyes. I think they have an outstanding team and expect a competitive game.

Welcome. All I ask is you say humble and genuine since this is a Clemson fan sight.

First I don’t think OSU should be in the playoffs due to only playing 6 games. That is no fault on there part but the Big 10 and PAC 12 decided to start late so there should be consequences.

I do think the late start has hurt your team due to not a whole lot of practice time together. It has also helped because there’s not as much wear and tear on there bodies for this year yet.
Fields does seem off but with the great oline you have and the rbs y’all are more than capable of keeping it interesting. Obviously I hope Clemson wins but hopefully it’ll be an injury free game with no dirty plays by either team.

Eleben Warriors site than is in any way going your way from Tigernet. But, be that as it may, I share the view of most Clemson people this time around, which of course Ohio State is free to prove wrong on the football field.

Last year your guys jumped out on us early, and it took pretty much everything we had to pull the game out at the end. If not for that miscommunication between Fields and his receiver that wound up in Nolan Turners hands, we would be the ones lamenting what might have been. AND, I will freely admit that we had some splitting hair calls go our way. BUT, if you followed Clemson football at all, you would know that trying to claim the officials were out to help us is absolutely ludicrous. If anything, the opposite is true.

Now, on to this year. My honest evaluation, having watched only two Ohio State games this year (Indiana and BIG Championship Game) is that your team has taken a slight step back, talentwise. The offense is still formidable, but streakier than last year. The defense is not even in the same zip code as last year.

Clemson has either treaded water, or fallen off slightly on offense compared to last year. It is on defense that we have made MAJOR improvement.

So, my overall view of how the game will go is that the offenses cancel each other out early, but as the game wears on, Clemson's defense begins to shine. I predict a 10-14 point win for the Tigers.

These discussions are usually one sided, as fans only know their own team and look at the game from a myopic view. I live in Ohio, surrounded by Buckeye fans/friends. They suffer from the same issues. I can’t really talk to them about this game, there is such unhealthy anger toward Dabo and all things Clemson.

Their anger is misplaced. Dabo doesn’t hate Ohio or OSU. His mother-in-law is from a town 10 minutes away and he has visited this area multiple times. I can explain his comments and ranking OSU logically, but no Buckeye would understand or accept the truth behind it. So I won’t.

I can sum up the game rather quickly, having seen both teams every game the past few years. OSU needs to control the ball on offense with the run game, and build a lead so they can put pressure on the Clemson offense. Limit opportunities by playing keep a way. If they can’t do that I don’t see them winning. Our DL is young. I’m not certain you won’t be able to do that, but I must say I like our chances and would lay the points.

Welcome to TNet. I'll leave a few nuggets.

1. We don't hate tOSU. Honestly they feel like more of a little brother to us than USCjr does. USCjr is the little sister, like Michigan(or the whole BIG) is for you. We've beat tOSU every time so they've taken nothing from us. The only bad blood we have is from targeting which tends to trigger us because it's usually our biggest concern every post season. If you watch our playoff games you'll see the opponent target our QB basically every game, usually multiple times. Besides that the worst thing that people have Ohio have done to us is clog the roads in Charleston. Deep down we know tOSU has a very good program, unlike USCjr. As good as tOSU has been they haven't been up to Bama's or Clemson's standards since 2014 but literally nobody else has. Many of your fans seem to hate us because of 1 call last year. Yall gotta chill, Fields blew the game. The other losses were all on you. Keep in mind that YOUR TEAM had a HC punch one of our players in the throat so who has really been wronged here? And as much as a tOSU win would have felt good it would have yielded the same results that Clemson V LSU did. IMO we beat each other up too much to compete with LSU in the final.

2. Yall gotta get over the #11 ####. Even your own conference didn't think 5 games was enough to qualify for a simple conference championship. They had to bend the rules in the hopes of profiting off tOSU success. So why should the rest of the country have to bend a knee for a 6 win tOSU? Most of your fanbase fails to see how this is relevant. The #11 ranking is just Dabo standing by his word, something that is rare nowadays. For a little context there is another team that beat 3 (currently) ranked teams to tOSU's 2 and is on a 7 game win streak instead of a 6. Why should Oklahoma/B12 be punished for doing what it takes to play games when tOSU/BIG avoided scheduling a whole season? ACC/SEC/B12 scheduling was no secret.
And you can't say tOSU would have won those other games this year anyway. You know that you haven't performed that well against Indiana or Northwestern so no win is a gimme. Your team, like most, is very capable of losing to a Perdue on a bad week.

3. The game. I expect the game to be pretty competitive. Barring injuries I say Clemson has pretty good odds of winning though. ND is far better than Indiana and Northwestern and you saw what we did to them at full strength. Turner being out is a concern but I think we can deal with it for a half since yall run more than pass. We don't have the ELITE DL of 16-19 but it's pretty good if everyone is healthy and we can run a 4 man front. If they start penetrating your OL it will be a long night for Fields. Venables has made a career at Clemson terrorizing QBs and when he can we win. Our offense isn't as much as a deep threat as usual due to WR injuries that have been an issue all year but they have burned everyone 1-3 times a game. I heard your secondary is suspect and if that's the case Trevor will gladly take 7 yard outs to WR's and work the middle with TE's. ETN will be used as needed. If you don't stack the box, which you should, he will burn you multiple times. Here's the problem though. Trevor will kill you with 60 passes or 15 runs. Your DL will need to have a DOMINANT game to avoid ETN and Trevor from running all over you. Our OL has off games but they are pretty good overall, though most here won't admit it. The sample size for games this year is lower for everyone so we gotta play to see who is actually better.

Have a Merry Christmas. Tell your friends we're all hateful people and Florida is a much better place to live.

"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." Dabo knows OSU. He knows the Tigers. There have been 4 battles. OSU has lost all of them. The Tigers could conceivably lose this one though not likely with the OSU backend defense. The Tigers will not lose the war with OSU in your lifetime. Have a nice day. BTW, there's been a huge oil spill at Kiawah Island. It's ruined the place for decades. Florida is still open.

Welcome, like all passionate fanbases there will always be people who get out of line, we all love our teams. Concerning this year's game, the question I ask myself is this....Is Clemson better, equal, or worse than last year, and are the Buckeyes better, equal, or worse than last year? From what I have observed (eye test) Clemson is better on D, the Buckeyes are worse on D, both of the O's can be said to be equal to last year. Hence it makes football sense that over 60 minutes you will punt a few more times than we do and we are a touchdown better overall. But that's just me, I am expecting a slugfest for 60 minutes.

Good luck!

Here’s some civil discourse for you: Your OL #76 plays like he’s never had the rules of the game explained to him. I’ve never seen an OL who prefers to circle around defenders and wrap them up from behind as if it’s not a penalty. I blame the refs and your coaching staff. Secondly you need to promise that if there is a single cheap shot on #16 like last year by the LB, DB and Chase Young where it’s clear they have only one goal (take out Trevor by any means possible) that you will forever renounce your buckeye fandom and spend 1/4 your take home pay going forward on either Michigan or Notre Dame gear (we don’t need anymore bandwagon jumpers especially from up north).

My take on this year’s game vs last year’s.....

Posted: Dec 24, 2020, 9:31 AM

Last year Dobbins and Fields were absolute warriors out there....Ohio St. outplayed us early, but the games are 4 quarters for a reason and Clemson went on a 29-7 run after being down 16-0.
This year, I haven’t seen Ohio St play very much. I know Fields is still there, Sermon is a good RB (though not as good as Dobbins) and that your defense does not seem to be as strong as last year’s unit.
Clemson has battled through a lot of injuries this year...but when healthy, our defense is better than last year’s...especially up front on the d-line. Our offense has been missing several receivers most of the year, but is still humming along. Lawrence has improved and when he has played this year, we’ve been very difficult for opposing defenses to deal with....he’s a legit # 1 pick. ETN is very involved in the passing game...even when the running game isn’t thriving.
Our kicker is very good too (always important in big games).
Due to having to play the full season with lots of injuries, Covid, etc....we have a very deep team and at this point, the young guys know what they are doing and this team has extremely good chemistry.
If you want a prediction...I think Clemson wins by double digits. Last year’s Ohio St. team was excellent and played really well. This year’s team is probably a really good team...but not quite as good as Clemson. We occasionally start slow....so don’t be fooled by an early lead you obtain or some of our offensive sputterings in the first quarter......it always cranks up eventually.

It look like you might have a lot to digest when you get up this morning. I think that many of us would look forward to a discussion to get a better idea of your strengths and weaknesses as you see them as a fan. Though neither fan base as a whole would say so I believe that I would take last years version if I had a choice. The one caveat would be that I get Trevor's late regular season performance instead of his playoff one. I do believe that our defense is much better this year, but our OL will need to step it up. They were much improved playoffs vs regular season in 2018 so I am hopeful.

To me your secondary has been questionable and your OL has not done well in pass protection against the better DL's that it has faced, but I haven't seen enough to really know. Since you are up for a discussion, what are the differences between 2019 and 2020 OSU? Your strengths and weaknesses? What are your concerns with Clemson from what you know?

It look like you might have a lot to digest when you get up this morning. I think that many of us would look forward to a discussion to get a better idea of your strengths and weaknesses as you see them as a fan. Though neither fan base as a whole would say so I believe that I would take last years version if I had a choice. The one caveat would be that I get Trevor's late regular season performance instead of his playoff one. I do believe that our defense is much better this year, but our OL will need to step it up. I would say our secondary is a major weakness compared to last year. Wade has been decent, but got beat a lot by Penn State’s Dotson and Indiana’s Fryfogle. Sevyn Banks is a little bit of a liability on the other side of the field and I expect Clemson to exploit him early and often. Our front 7 is solid, but we don’t have an elite edge rusher like Chase Young this year. Tyreke Smith, Jonathon Cooper, and Zach Harrison are very good tho. A lot of our rush is generated from the interior of our d-line (Garrett and Togiai in particular).

Offensively, we have 2 excellent receivers and a ton of elite freshman receivers who are still unproven. Sermon is no JK Dobbins, but he looked really good the last few games. One X factor could be freshman running back Miyan Williams (he’s built like a bowling ball and has been very effective when he’s been in the game). Our o-line has been very good as a run blocking unit and far less so in pass protection (although half of the sacks they’ve given up are more a result of Fields holding onto the ball too #### long).

That brings me to Fields.....he is super talented and is absolutely capable of winning this game if he plays up to his capability. However, I have been very unimpressed with him this year in the 2 biggest games he played in. He holds on to the ball too long and makes questionable decisions when facing pressure. He will need to be better and make better decisions against Clemson’s stout defense. Venables is a master of his craft so Ryan Day will need to call a much better game than he did against Northwestern to have a chance.

To be honest, I used to pull for the Buckeyes when they were not playing Clemson. This stems from my OSU friends and roommates from Colorado. We were at the 31-0 beat down together which was very fun for me of course. I have allot of great memories from hanging at the Buckeye alumni bars there. Still get some of the OSU band songs stuck in my head. Once “Hang on Sloopy” gets in your head it is hard to get out.

The crying and reaction from last year left a bad taste in my mouth though as it did for many Clemson fans and I cannot stand your turd of a coach. So for me this dislike started last year. Even my buddies were complaining etc.

This all being said, I have not watched much OSU, but any Tiger fan that does not think this is a pick em game is overly confident with no basis.

Our offense has been very good this year in the passing game, but the oline cannot seem to run block even to a mediocre level. Although they looked very good against ND in the run game. Also, our WR core is talented but young and injured at this point. OSU will want to force one of the young WR’s to beat them by trying to lock down Amari. Also, Powell has stepped up this year.

Our defense is solid but young as well. Our secondary loses some receivers and the dline is still learning. We can tend to lose gap control and generally have to blitz to get pressure. Now next year look out. This D is going to be nasty with the gained experience and the guys that will return with the free year of eligibility.

So, expect a close shootout in the 30s like last year with a few plays being the difference.

Clemson football is like a seasoned army that has been fighting on the front lines all year, while OSU just got assigned their rifles handed clean uniforms. They are being marched into battle with very little live round experience, I do not expect this to be pretty, and I expect blood.

Best of luck to you.

Expect to see a bunch of this when OSU is on defense.

At this level you never know what can happen. I’m confident that we won’t let your RB get 300+ yards rushing. What I’ve seen from Fields is that he doesn’t respond well to pressure. Your OLine might be great but Fields takes a ton more sacks than TL does. I expect OSU to challenge us deep with Turner being out in the first half. I’m hopeful ETN can have a big day in his home state. I’m also excited to see Ladson contribute at WR.

I think Clemson wins if Tony Elliot does not try to get too cute. Run Etienne about 20 times, but dont make it predictable. Throw the ball down the field. Give Lawrence time in the pocket. I feel when clemson plays high profile teams, the game plan changes and gets too conservative. Hopefully they open the playbook up
