somebody mentioned that Buffalo Springfield, the Beach Boys & Strawberry Alarm Clock played at Clemson in 1968. That's like, groooovy baby. I admit, I was a bit skeptical at first. I didn't think they were lying, just mistaken where they saw the show. But no, I did a little research and indeed, those bands played at "the fieldhouse" on April 7 1968, which I guess means Fike.
I'd be willing to bet most attendees only came for the Beach Boys, and the other bands were filler. But man, Buffalo Springfield was in it's last days, they broke up less than a month later.
"After several drug-related arrests and line-up changes, the group disbanded in 1968. Stephen Stills went on to form the supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash with David Crosby of The Byrds and Graham Nash of The Hollies. Neil Young launched his solo career and later joined Stills in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in 1969. Richie Furay, along with Jim Messina, went on to form the country-rock band Poco. Buffalo Springfield was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997."

the band auditioned Leslie West from Mountain to fill the spot but couldn't agree on the billing. West wanted 'Lynyrd Skynyrd featuring Leslie West' but Ronnie wasn't having any of that.

I'll pass on Skynyrd. I saw them with ABB in Charlotte and it was a shell of a decent band. It was like a crappy cover band but the mouth breathers loved it. ABB killed it though.

Or maybe it was a GWAR cover band. Or some band that reminded me vaguely of a GWAR cover band.
One thing I do know is that I was pretty drunk at the time.

"The long and impressive list of jazz and blues celebrities appearing at the club include Ruth Brown, Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Elmore James, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner, Piano Red, Otis Redding, comedian Red Foxx, Wilson Pickett, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, James Brown and scores of others."
Do a little digging on a place called Littlejohn Grill.
