Exactly, but after everything is said and done, FOOTBALL do matter. HS sports is the beginning of the help for underprivileged kids that would have never been able to go to college if they hadn't been athletic enough to play college sports. And FB is the only college sport that offers a full scholarship to a 4 year university cost free after they leave with a degree or diploma if they graduate. Also a lucky few will get good enough with their sport at the college level, that they will be chosen to play pro sports with contracts worth more money than their parents have ever made in their entire life time. FB does matter, and it does matter mostly for black athletes.

Anybody that believes the FB matters shirt that Dabo wears is a bad thing, those people that are doing the talking are complete Idiots only attempting to bring Dabo down, and that is all about their jealousy they feel bc of what Dabo has done at Clemson with FB.

The sport of FB has improved the lives of Black FB players 10 to 1 over White FB players in HS, college, and professional FB... Black FB players dominate the available positions in FB at all three levels that FB is played, so yes, Football Matters mainly for Black lives!!!!

Just FYI, that’s not the first reason NUK doesn’t say CU in NFL introductions. He hasnt said it in years, it was because he felt all colleges were making $ on from their sport. Needs to stay with his original statement.

That is such BS. How can "that" be the right thing to do, but not the right thing to look at all the other slave owners? You are just repeating what you are told - can you think for yourself?

How can Clemson keep its name? TG Clemson was married to Calhoun's daughter for goodness sake.

But, if it turns out this is the beginning of the end of the BS, it will have been the right decision to get it over with quick.

But, you know the reason "we don't negotiate with terrorist" is because once you give in, they know you will give in again.

Again will come.

Sure it will, bullying is the leader for forcing your will, it always has been, and it will always be!!! But it shouldn't have ever come to these circumstances, those names should have been long ago removed bc of what they represent. And those men's hate came bc of losing free labor off the backs of slavery, and slavery is wrong regardless of what it meant for slave owners that bought thousands of acres of land with the intentions to farm it with free labor that help to fill their bank accounts bc of their personal greed for money, and the power that the money gave them!!!

Unfortunately it will never be eradicated until the return of Christ. All this angst is about Man's desire to be or trying be good on his own. Only through Jesus are we not dead men walking. There is evil throughout every culture and all of history but everyone only sees what they want to see and use click words like my culture, lets have dialog, oppression as the words of the day. Well, the good news is that God said come to me all that are weary and heavy burden and I will give you rest which = peace.

If you're taking Calhoun's name off of things then you need to change the name of the University. Calhoun's son in law was a secessionist slave owner. If you really want to do the right thing you would move the university off the land.

So... Now that the politically correct dominoes have begun to fall, the next question is what will the name "Clemson University" be changed to? Where is the end to this? How do we deal with reconciling history with wishful thinking? Particularly when a large and significant number of people are equally offended at the eradication of things they hold dear? I get that some people are offended by history, but it seems to me that "two wrongs do not make a right!"

Clemson Trustees approve Honors College name change; request authority to restore original name of Tillman Hall

CLEMSON, S.C. — The Clemson University Board of Trustees today approved changing the name of the University’s Honors College to the Clemson University Honors College, effective immediately. The college has been named the Calhoun Honors College since 1982.

The trustees also approved a resolution respectfully requesting authority from the South Carolina General Assembly to restore Tillman Hall to its original name of the Main Building, commonly called “Old Main.”

“Clemson University has a long-celebrated history of tradition and excellence, but we must recognize there are central figures in Clemson’s history whose ideals, beliefs and actions do not represent the university’s core values of respect and diversity,” said Chairman Smyth McKissick. “Today’s action by the Board acknowledges that now is the time to move forward together as a more unified Clemson Family in order to make our university stronger today and into the future.”

In 2018, the Board asked Provost Robert Jones to lead a task force to study and make recommendations on ways to enhance the quality and relevance of the honors college. The Board approved the recommendations from the Provost, endorsed by President Jim Clements, which include setting the goal of becoming a nationally ranked, top-tier honors college; creating a dean position to oversee the college; creating a strategic plan for the college; and renaming the college to Clemson University Honors College.

The Board also adopted a resolution respectfully requesting the South Carolina General Assembly make a one-time exception to the state’s Heritage Act during the 2021 legislative session. This exception would give limited authority to the Board to restore Tillman Hall to its original name of the Main Building. The resolution further affirms that the Board will not be seeking any further exceptions from the Heritage Act beyond this request.

The actions today were consistent with a deliberative process set in motion by the Board in 2015 when it established a history task force to tell the full and complete history of Clemson. During the past few years, the task force has taken several actions including erecting historical markers, documenting Clemson founders’ biographies, and updating historical signage to better reflect the complete history. The Board actions today were in keeping with its values including integrity, respect, diversity, patriotism, excellence, and self-reliance.

“Our Trustees’ leadership today sends a clear message that Clemson University intends to be a place where all our students, employees and guests feel welcome,” said President Clements. “Our work in this area is far from finished, but we are committed to building on the progress we have made in the areas of diversity and inclusivity as we strive to serve our entire state and the nation.”

I've been a person a long time, and one thing I can tell you about people is, no matter what you do to try to make us happy, it'll never be enough. As soon we get what we thought we wanted, we realize we're not satisfied and we start working toward the next thing we think we want. The pursuit of happiness is one of the fundamental rights America was founded on, and unfortunately the word pursuit means we're always chasing happiness but never catch it.

Maybe they just did it because times are changing and it’s the right thing to do. We’ve been resisting for many years which just brought more drama than it’s worth.

I will probably call the building Tillman Hall in the future, but out of habit and not defiance. I had many classes, attended several speeches and even went to a couple concerts there...

Frank Howard field needs a rename.

TG Clemson was a slave owner and married Calhoun's daughter. The university should change their name. Of course I don't support this, but if you believe Calhoun and Tillman's names must be struck, then you should have the same opinion for TG Clemson.

Re: Of course there will be more

I am astounded at the lengths people will go in defending the Tillman and Calhoun names. They even say that to be consistent we have to change the name of the university. B.S. Calhoun has no, none, nada connection to Clemson University. He did not give us the land; he did not give us money. He did openly argue that we in the south commit acts of treason. He argue that no republic could succeed without slavery. Had we followed his advice to its natural conclusion, there would not be a United States of America. A question bigger than renaming the honors college is "Why was it ever named for him in the first place?'

Tlllman is a little different. He did play a central role in the founding of the university. Unfortunately though he was a murderous, racist thug. I is simply not possible to continue to honor a man as despicable as Tillman.

Now to compare these two to Thomas Green Clemson is a bad joke. Clemson gave the gift through his will that made this university possible. Without him there would be no Clemson University. He was not a murderous thug and he did not openly argue for treason against our country. He owned slaves at a time when it was legal and generally accepted in the south. We are not going to take Washington's and Jefferson's name off monuments, cities and colleges because they owned slaves. Remember the University Board of Trustees is made up of a majority of lifetime trustees and a minority of appointed trustees. The lifetime trustees choose their successors. If you think they will rename the university you are wrong.

Why would it have to solve all the problems in order to be the right move, and who said removing the flag or changing building names would solve every problem with racism?

If I’m your neighbor and don’t cut my grass for an entire year and leave trash in my yard as well, and then finally clean up the trash and cut the grass it won’t solve all of your problems, but it would solve the problem you had with your neighbors yard at least.

The logic of “we shouldn’t change something because that one thing won’t solve 100% of the problems” is some very stupid logic.

I am probably about as conservative (not just political but in general) as anyone on here, but I think this is a good thing. For starters, the Calhoun Honors College was named in 1981, so it is not like this has a long history. Secondly, we are all ONE Clemson and if a segment of our community is personally bothered by something, especially some athletes, who play such a big role in representing our university on a national stage, then I am all for supporting them. Perhaps we should rename it after Harvey Gantt, or someone else, that has played a positive role in representing our university after graduation.

You guys need to get off the "if others are bothered or offended..."

NO ONE would be bothered or offended if it were not for social media and politics. The root of G Floyd situation now is not about him, not about cops, etc. It is about removing Trump.

We are not changing names because true Clemson people want the name to change. The name-changers have been told what to think, and they think it. It is obvious.

As obvious as the Steele Dossier. If you have not read it, Google it. All you need to do is read the summaries (maybe there are 15 or so summaries) and sit back and think about it. A high-school freshman could have written a better fake document - it is outrageously fake and cannot be true. It is like saying the USA brought down the WTC.

The current "racism" issue is made up. We have a union issue in that the bad cop should have been fired long ago. No more no less. One bad dude, we know there are more, but one bad due who should have been fired BUT COULD NOT BE BECAUSE OF LIBERAL POLICIES.

Nine unarmed black men shot and killed last year. Nineteen (19) unarmed white men shot. But, they are not on video and/or of course mainstream media would never show it. A police office is 18.5 times more likely to be killed by a black male than an unarmed black male is to be killed by a police officer. In 2018 blacks committed > 50% of homicides and > 60% of robberies (most black-on-black crime) while making up < 15% of the population. Black high-school graduation rates have lagged whites for decades (but they are getting closer, but I also know schools are graduating more people to up their own ratings).

But, alas, changing names is going to fix all this.

of the argument, but feel ultimately that it is not necessary to have buildings named after figures that create division amongst the campus. Clemson University is here in its present form to serve the views of all of its students and alumni past and present in a way that should unify rather than divide. If these men were alive today, I would think that they would sacrifice their name on a building for the overall well being of the University that they had envisioned and strived to create.I know if I had a vision I truly believed in and my name was doing more harm to that vision rather than helping, I would step aside for the advancement of the vision. However, that said, I feel that they should not just be forgotten or their parts in the founding and creation of Clemson glossed over and ignored. I think Clemson should create a museum of sorts for the history of Clemson University from its founding to present day where these men can be recognized for their contributions to Clemson in the proper context and should include both positive and negative aspects of their life.

The Bible talks about slavery. Are these same people going to try to remove the Bible from existence? If our barometer for removing things is that it mentions slavery and/or offends someone, then everyone here who wants Tillman Hall and Calhoun Honors College renamed should support that as well.

Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?

He didn't say it would never end, just that it cannot end at least and until the slave owner TG Clemson's name is removed from the university. You cannot have it for some and not for others... or can you? Hmmmmm...

I personally don't care whether the honors college is named

[1]
Posted: Jun 12, 2020, 2:17 PM

after Calhoun, or the building is named after Tillman. But I am able to recognize that both Calhoun and Tillman played a big role in Clemson University being here today. I am able to separate my disdain for what they (and many, many other people during their time) stood for, and my appreciation for their contributions to Clemson University.

Those names have been associated with Clemson University for a long time. They obviously didn't offend/hurt Nuk and Deshaun enough to choose not to come to Clemson for a free education. Those names also didn't keep them from having a great experience at Clemson, and turn that experience into a career that allows them to do what they love and make millions of dollars.

I agreed with the confederate flag being removed from the top of the state house, and felt that a memorial was a much better place for it. I disagree with removing it entirely from existence, as if it never happened, because it IS part of our history.

Expecting history to be perfect, and therefore trying to erase any memory of the imperfect and/or negative aspects, is asinine.

You said that building names from people who died over 100 years ago do more than offend people. Please explain how.

What exactly does the Bible say about slavery. I am no expert on the Bible, but I'm pretty sure the inspired writers of the Bible taught that slavery was wrong. So the fact that it was not against the laws of the land 200 years ago does not excuse this abhorrent behavior. It was wrong. Period.

these men the University would not even exist. They had slaves, while that is wrong, it wasn't against the law.

Honestly gmurra you are almost not worth the time. No one is arguing that Tillman was very instrumental in getting an agricultural college that would provide a better education to SC's farmers than they were getting from the University of South Carolina at the time. He did a wonderful job of making that happen with the land the Mr. Clemson left for that purpose. But when the now university originally started his name wasn't on the building. It was RENAMED later. The man openly hated s group of people and Old Main should never have had its name changed in the first place. Honestly........

I'm fine with renaming Tillman, not sure about Calhoun Honors College. If it's all about owning slaves, then will UVA rename their most prestigious scholars program. It is currently the Jefferson scholars. I did some research and it stated that although he verbally said that "all men are created equal" and was against slavery, he owned and traded slaves off of his plantations. A little bit hypocritical.

Why not keep the names as they are???

Put up a sign next to the building explaining the honoree’s true biography. List that they were racist, pro-segregation or if they owned slaves.

But also list how they helped establish the University.

Like it or not —- evil men did something good in establishing the university and changing the name of buildings and programs will never change that.

Own your history so you learn from it and never repeat it.

BOT needs to just change the name of Clemson to “Gray”. Not Gray University, just Gray. All the buildings should be called Gray, the football team “The Gray Grays”. Uniforms are of course a bland stale shade of gray. I’m fact, all schools and businesses should rebrand as “Gray”. The football team needs to be more inclusive and maybe expand the roster by about 100x. Let everyone play, and as TB was a believer in, let’s lose some games we should win, just so everyone feels nice and happy. At the very least, let the other teams score some points and keep it “competitive” until the last couple seconds, where the most offended team is declared the winner.

Sounds innovative, exciting and inclusive, doesn’t it!

I for one am proud of the BOT for taking advantage of this opportunity to do what should have been done long ago. Tillman Hall was named that in 1946 as a backlash to the desegregation movement. And unfortunately John C. Calhoun has a legacy primarily defined by pro-slavery. I think we all know this is indefensible. Let’s take pride in having the courage and wisdom to correct the situation for generations to come. It’s nice to be on the right side of history.
