Last night. I said fire Elliot..

K, little overkill reaction to what I saw and the intake of bourbon.

However, he stunk it up. The play calling was HORRIBLE. With the talent we have on offense it looks like a struggle to manufacture any offense. Bad play calling. No creativity. Bubble screen, KB run, repeat. Higgins TD and Amaris big plays were ALL them, not Elliot’s wizard play calling.

I firmly believe Watson covered up the OCs shortcomings and massive amount of inexperience.

I am well aware of where we got with him. Again, we should have with our talent level. But when the other coach calls plays like they did and comments they know how we’re going to call plays... it’s a problem. A&M looked like the better team on offense last night and that was against our defense which we argue has the best front 7 in college..

100% agree. Our players make the offense look good. Not the playcalling. It’s so predictable and vanilla. Too many weapons not to be utilized. And as far as the D, why do they look unbreakable and then go into safety mode when we have a small lead. SMH

I think Elliott is a great coordinator and I’m glad he’s in orange. However, his problem comes when we’ve got the lead and it ultimately has given KB the reputation of being “mediocre” with his arm. Once we’ve established a comfortable lead, we begin to start throwing screens, QB draws, etc.

Too much talent on the boundaries to not get WR’s involved downfield. KB can only be as good as the play calling of Elliott.

Problem with your logic is that we were throwing screens in the first quarter.....

The fact that we have one of the most talented WR Corp in the nation and there were only four receivers that caught passes last night not counting ETN. Add in the fact that we only had 115 yards rushing due to dives, dives, and some more dives.

I concede that. But bc of Elliot or in spite of? Again, we have weapons. Best WRs in college. Watson was the best qb both years we got there with him. We got to where we should have.

My point is if you didn’t see a problem last night with how we looked on offense and regress to “well, we’ve been winning and got to xyz last few years”, we’re in trouble.

Possibly an over reaction, but Elliot is not experienced enough nor flexible/creative enough when the “game plan” ain’t working to actually change and progress mid game with adjustments.

Seems we always run quarterback draws on our last offensive possession and dont try to get another first down when the game is on the line.

did you possibly consider that AtM had a lot to do with our offensive struggles?

I 100% did. That’s part of it sure. Their offense looked fantastic against our stellar defense.

So is our defense bad, or perhaps they have someone that can call plays to take advantage of a scheme or their strengths

No, our defense definitely isnt bad, but I would say that while our front 4 is the best in the nation, we so have limitations in the back 7. I have never seen Joseph bounce of a ball carrier until last night, but hopefully it was a one game hiccup partly brought on from being left on the field way too much on a hot TX night. This I will say however, Fields is going to get picked on a LOT imo. Best believe Syracuse and Dungey are going to go after him early and often. Just my .02 cents.

If I was an opposing OC I would throw at Fields every time. Even if you don't complete it, its pretty much a guaranteed DPI...

Dude just can't keep his hands off the receiver...

If you were our OC you wouldn't. You would run your qb up the middle or throw a screen behind the line of scrimmage.

It's funny you say that. I believe the real talent on his team last year was Kendall Briles. Many schools wont touch him, but he is a lights out, innovative play caller, likely the next Lincoln Riley. Houston was glad to get him I'm sure.

3 straight playoff appearances and no one has hired either of our young offensive coordinators away from us .... what does that tell ya?

We are a good OC and Oline coach away from being unstoppable in college football IMO.

With that said, the program is still performing at a very high level, only second to Bama in the recent years so hard to complain about that (but watch us try right?) LOL

Definitely could afford some creativity in the offensive playbook. Ever since 2016, the playbook seems to have gotten smaller and smaller and lackluster. Maybe it's because the quarterback play isn't nearly as good as it was in 2016 with DW4, but even then, we struggled to put teams away due to some questionable offensive production ('16 Auburn/Troy/Louisville/NC State). The bubble screens are frustrating and nearly useless at this point and the QB draw is predictable. Jeff Scott is a key piece to the offense, mainly because of the elite recruiting job he's done with the WR's, but Elliot, I don't know man. He's wayyy too conservative at calling plays, and there's already been some questions brought up about how he coaches the running backs too strictly to stick to the play design instead of making a play happen...idk, just rambling here. Just a little frustrated that will all the offensive talent we have we're not putting up at least 30-40 points a game lol. I know that's not realistic, especially against a good defense like A&M's, but there's no reason the defense should be backed into a corner every game because of the offense's incompetence.

Elliott changed the face of Clemson offense...

after Chad Morris left. He has migrated away from two major key principals of tempo and misdirection that Morris instilled in our offense. Morris used the jet sweep misdirection touch passes, etc. on just about every play. Tony has gone away from that.

I saw a replay from behind of ETNs big run down the right side. If he runs up the middle “where he’s supposed to run” he gets 1-2 yards. He bounces it outside away from the trash and picks up 20. They are hamstringing the RBs because we can’t create any room to run where the play is designed to go.

Unpopular opinion.

But you're not wrong. Too many weapons for such mediocre playcalling.

Just something to consider...

Historically, we don't install a lot of plays at the beginning of the season. We tend to limit our plays until we get deeper into the season. My best guess is we do this to limit film that opposing teams will have to plan with.

I was frustrated with the play calling last night, but the execution was not as crisp as it could have been. Additionally, aTm's defense played very well.

Conversely, CBV didn't have much to plan with as aTm has a new coaching staff this year. Again, execution on the defensive side was not good at times, but we still have to credit aTm with having a good offensive game plan against our defense.

I want more creative but not gimmicky

Posted: Sep 9, 2018, 11:29 AM

I wasn’t a fan of the Philly Special we poorly attempted last night. Also Chad Morris had to use tempo and misdirection a lot because we were outmatched talent-wise for many of those years. That clearly isn’t the case now. We should be able to line up with the talent we have, execute and adjust. A&M adjusted to our defense (after holding the whole game). They had receivers cutting into open areas and gaps in our defense, mainly across the middle. I feel like sometimes we come into games with a plan and win or lose with it. If it doesn’t work, we just go down with the ship with it. Finally, with the stable of RB’s we have, I think QB runs should be a last resort. It’s just an unnecessary risk. To me it starts with making a decision at QB and building a playbook around that guy’s strengths that everyone can get used to and comfortable with.

I don’t disagree to an extent, however I don’t think jet sweeps are gimmicky this day and age. Do you? To me it seems as mainstream as the option of the 1980’s. The double dive/sweep fake action we used to run really challenges the eyes of the linebackers and d-backs on downfield passes. It freezes them for just an instant and creates confusion and separation on mid and downfield passes. I hate to see that we went away from that misdirection. I didn’t see it as gimmicky. That was a staple of the Morris offense. Is that what you’re calling gimmicky? I worry that other teams now know exactly what is coming. I think Jimbo said as much. Yes, we need to line up an out execute but when you face teams with similar talent that becomes hard when they know what’s coming.

I also pointed out that Tony had changed the face of the Morris offense by moving away from tempo. Do you disagree? I did not say I thought that was good or bad. I think tempo is great at times and not so great at other times. Morris basically only had one speed when it came to tempo. I didn’t much like that. I initially thought Tony was going to have a better handle on when to use tempo and when to slow it down a bit. Now I’m more worried Tony has totally abandoned the hurry up aspect. It’s early and I have faith in our coaches. We have a lot of young kids playing. I do hope to see the playbook expand with more tempo and misdirection. I even like trick plays (gimmicks) too, but don’t want to have to rely on them to win.

This offense looks more Rob Spence than Chad Morris. It’s like we have have a stable of thoroughbreds, but we choose to ride a donkey

I agree but I am keeping in mind the weather conditions. It’s very possible the strategy going in was let’s take care of the ball and let our defense win it for us. I think Elliott and Scott have earned our confidence overall. I expect (hope) to see them get more creative moving forward.

Not impressed at all. I think part of him wishes we had Georgia's OL so we can play smashmouth generally. I am joking a little. I haven't been impressed with him generally though, but let's see how things change as we go along. Maybe he is just playing into who he thinks we have. I bet we are airing it all over the place with TL this year as the year goes on. That was tough spot yesterday to even make a serious judgement as to what is going on.

Every year we go through the same thing, an early season gameplan to prepare our players for the future not one to put fans in the comfort zone. Our coaches never consider how we feel during the game but like good parents they want us to be happy after the season is over.

How long has it been since this same OC you're openly criticizing right here in front of God and the entire world not sent us into downtime feeling like we had an excellent year?

A few years ago they were genius now they're fools. You guys are like a rudderless ship, blown about by every breeze, not knowing where you've been or how to get where you want to go. This is pure foolishness.

We do remember Bama though. People have a point to an extent. It will open up as the year goes along though. It will be wide open in some games. Next week for example.

It seems like we don’t have the killer instinct to put good teams away early. The offense is extremely predictable and conservative when we get a lead which allows teams to keep hope and get back Into the game.

There’s no reason why ETN is getting less than touches a game. I also don’t understand why we continue to run the QB 3 straight times when we need a first down to ice the game. It has NEVER worked and everyone on the planet knows it’s coming. Forces us to rely on a defense that’s bending and close to breaking.

I know right! It’s not like our rec league playcalling and offensive game plan had anything to do with our D being gassed in the fourth!
