Fun Engineering problem, load calc

Jan 27, 2021, 11:00 AM

If I have 25 housing units, and each unit has 3 1-ton units (12,000 btus), and I am in the desert (middle east), and I have 2 shower units and 2 toilet units (hot water + HVAC) and I have miscellaneous lighting and outlets and I'm gonna run these hookups 400 ft or so.

What size generator do I need?

Just one of them Honda 2200s and deep cycle marine battery.***

Preferably a long way from any neighborhoods

NONE.

Jan 27, 2021, 11:04 AM

Sounds like you just need a multi-pronged surge protector and a really long extension cord. I can help you with the length of cord in feet if you can give me the mileage to the nearest electrical outlet.

What wattage and supply voltage ?

I like your funny words magic man

I would estimate about 500kW-600kW to be safe....

Jan 27, 2021, 11:11 AM

pretty sure generators in that range will be 3-phase, so you'll need to try to equally load each phase as best as possible.

Give me your address to send my invoice.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, it would be 3 phase. I initially thot 150kW

Jan 27, 2021, 11:17 AM

but coworker calcs 500kW and I'm all like how?

I want to sayHVAC is pulling 1.5kW X 3 = 4.5 + 0.5 for outlets and lights...so 5kW perRLB.

25X5 + double the showers and toilets (4X10). This gets me to 165kW. Let's call it 175kW and add 40% for safety and say 250kW....so now I am at 250kW and we gonna call it 500? Seems pretty big.

0.5kW for outlets and lights? ROFL.***

40X12 building, yeah I rounded, but I rounded a 1kW up to

Jan 27, 2021, 11:37 AM

1.5kW then multiplied X 3....So theoretically, I have 5kW for a single building with 3 one ton units, some led fixtures, and a couple laptops plugged in, some phones charging.

This is pretty much sleeping only, also why I'm asking whatcha think.

I don't work in BTU's normally, but....

Jan 27, 2021, 11:53 AM [ in reply to Yes, it would be 3 phase. I initially thot 150kW ]

I calculated 12000 BTUs (1 ton unit) = 3.5kW x 3 per house x 25 houses = 262.5 kW
