"Institutions" that I really, really miss from my youth.

Jul 1, 2020, 8:42 AM

1. Casey Kasem: American Top 40. Or, Casey's Coast to Coast, as he would also sometimes refer to it. As a child entering my teen years just after the British Invasion (BEATLES, Not General Cornwallis), music was a huge part of my life. I always tuned in on Sundays to catch what records were making their way up the charts.

2. Leonard Post Toasties: Leonard's Losers. You couldn't consider yourself a college football fan in the South if you didn't listen to Leonard Post Toasties tell you who was gonna lose each game each week. Just getting on his broadcast meant that your team mattered. Get me out of here, Percy.

3. Bob Fulton: Voice of the Gamecocks. I had an older brother and sister that both attended Coot U, and until I picked Chemical Engineering as a major, it was thought that I too would attend that burnarable institution. Listening to Bob Fulton broadcast Carolina football, and especially basketball, was a treat. He truly was the Dean of Broadcasters in this state.

4. Jim Phillips: Voice of the Tigers. Once my college decision was made, and upon attending my first Clemson football game, any residual vestiges of Cootism growing up were blown away. The scales fell from my eyes, and I could see clearly for the first time. Listening to Jim Phillips on the radio when not in attendance at Death Valley, Littlejohn, or Doug Kingsmore itself was comforting, and seemed to make all be right with the world. He brought the listener into the game without injecting himself into the game, as some Todd Ellis announcers unfortunately do today.

Who can some of you'se add to this list?

I agree with you on #1, 2, & 4. I've been orange-blooded since I was knee-high to a grasshopper and never listened to the coot's games. Phillips really had a way to make you feel like you were in the stadium wataching the game.

I agree with all on your list and would like to add one. Walter Cronkite on the CBS nightly news. He was an experienced journalist that had reported during WWII and gave a non-biased report on the news of the day without all of the opinion junk we get now. Huntley-Brinkley were also good, but Walter was my favorite.

Having fewer choices in those days meant we all had more in common. I grew up on two TV stations...three if the weather was just right. I remember going "to town" one Saturday night to rent a hotel room to watch Clemson play Florida State on something called "ESPN". That was the night Danny Ford had the team face the opposite direction when the Seminole threw his spear into the ground. That game was well worth the price of a room.

ACC basketball games on CD Chesley network - "Sail with the Pilot" Thacker/Packer and Bones were the announcers.

Record Stores - I would spend hours going through the albums - looking at all the cool covers.

WBTV local newscasts with Clyde McClean doing the weather forecasts.

Woody Durham calling UNC games on the radio.

Sitcoms on regular TV that the whole country watched together and discussed.

That keyed a memory. I use to love to pick up baseball games at night on the radio. Braves were near, no problem but I could pick up the Reds most of the time. Depending on atmospheric conditions, the Pirates or the Orioles every now and then. I’ll take a good radio announcer describing all aspects of a game instead of TV production any day!

#### Biondi of WLS in Chicago was the best DJ ever! Listened every night. WLS was a powerful station in those days.

More recently, Murphy in the morning was always a hoot.

Dizzy Dean and Buddy Blatner. If you didn’t enjoy that pair you had a problem. They made baseball even more fun for a youngster like me.

Don Meredith. I bet you all remember that clown. We’re No. 1 was a classic. Remember that?

You’ll have to be an old Tiger fan as I am to remember Bill Goodrich. “Goodnight redhead”. Remember that?

Don’t get me started. I can do this for hours. Getting old has it moments. Especially if you can keep your mind!

Before FM became big, Clear Channels on AM were the thing. WTMA in Charleston would down power at sundown and those of us living in or near Walterboro would have to find another station. The main ones back then was WBT in Charlotte or Knoxville(do not remember the call sign). At midnight BT went country so I started to listen to CFL (Chicago), WEEE(Cleveland) or some others. If the situation was romantic, might listen to WLW (Cinncy) at midnight with the show "Moonriver", mostly organ music. I think there was a Detroit station but I do not remember the call sign. This was before 8 tracks were readably available.
