Honest Buckeye Perspective of Clemson

Posted: Dec 27, 2020, 12:25 PM

Hello all- I started reading this blog a couple days ago just to see what the other side was saying about this game.... A couple things have been said over and over in a negative light of OSU so I thought I would share my thoughts....
1. Certainly myself and a lot of buckeyes who know college football have the utmost respect for Clemson but....
A. Clemson has been a recent phenomenon in the college game meaning...When I was a kid growing up in the 90s we never thought one bit about Clemson other than maybe that they had cool helmets. I find it funny that for some reason a lot of you here act like Clemson has always been this dominant. That is just not true.
B. The fact that you call OSU whiners.... this is also interesting to me. Somehow I am reading that if certain calls don’t go your way that you (Clemson fans) would not talk about it....somehow you are above that. Yet, when discussing our national championships you are quick to bring up the 2002 Miami game and the call at the end of the day that went in our favor allowing us to win the NC. (One I actually believe was the wrong call, despite being an alum). Again I thought you were above that?
C. Dabo Sweeney- most people in college football cannot stand him....why? For the most part it is because he wins and I respect that. Great coach! What rubs a lot of us the wrong way is when he opens his mouth.... He is the one that is whiny. Earlier this year he said that if the big ten champ gets in, he was fine with that because it is just a crazy year. Now he is using this platform to say he does not believe they should be in. Why the change of heart....it is just whiny rhetoric which drives us all nuts. I am not saying he does not have a right to give opinion or that he is not wrong but drives the rest of us nuts.
C. Bonus- Kirk Herbstreit god love him

Kirk Herbstreit is obsessed with certain coaches.. his love affair of Venables also is just so annoying. Count how many times he says his name during our game. Again, not necessarily a Clemson thing but just becoming annoying. Could be a drinking game!

In any case certainly hope it is a great game. I am not sure how we win only playing 6 games, not having those game reps for a young team but to great programs going at it again....can’t wait. Go Bucks! I certainly respect Clemson also!

The big 10 and especially Ohio State/Michigan are still living back in the 1930's/40'.Prior to 2002,your last AP national championship was 1968,then 1954,then 1942.That's 60 years total w/o,and you somehow consider yourselves perennially relevant. You're as pathetic as the leghumpers from Georgia. What you are really is a media created myth bolstered by the big 10's longtime monopoly of the Rose Bowl.

Can we agree there is a number of games that is too few to be considered for the playoff?

Certainly 0 is too few.
1,2,3,4 likewise, would you not agree?

So there is a number that is too few, I think the entire country could agree on that. Dabo’s number is lower than the average OSU fan’s number from everything I see. He is not being “disrespectful”. He is being honest with what he believes. He has no “hate” for OSU despite what OSU fans think.

The only hate I see is the hate being directed towards him and Clemson from the Buckeye nation.

The big ten leaders botched this thing from the beginning....they called the season, then started late, then put in arbitrary rules that were not evidenced based. No other conference had those dumb rules. Not the kids fault at all. Fact is OSU is the best team
In the conference and everyone knows it. If there was evidence behind the 21 day rule (which there is not) or the 6 game rule (just made up) then maybe the country has an argument.... just people hating us like they hate you.

You are so correct. So, so correct. A team that’s played 6 games is totally deserving of a shot at a national championship. I mean a 2 win team in Columbia, SC (that the uber relevant OSU is 0-2 against, btw) actually got a bowl bid this year. Evidently, 2020 is the year of participation trophies for certain teams, so congrats on yours. The best part is, Clemson pretty much has a first round bye to the national championship since drawing OSU. Trevor Lawrence is going to completely shred your secondary, and Travis Etienne will clean up with 100+ on the ground. Your offense will move the ball on Clemson’s defense some, but not enough to keep up. Look for another showing like the last Clemson/Notre Dame game. You can say what you want, but I’ll save this post and look for you after the game. If you’re anything like most OSU fans that have been on TigerNet before games, you’ll be a ghost.

First of all, thanks for the perspective. However, there are some flaws.

We are not “whining” about a call against Miami. That’s not our team, just stating the obvious. Secondly, we may not have dominant in the 90’s or early 2000’s but for the most part we had winning records. 1981 we had a national championship. We have the same amount of championships since this century started. Thirdly, Dabo Swinney (correct spelling) said he was fine with Big Ten champ getting in before they changed the rules to let Ohio State in with less games. He is also not the only one who has a problem with CFP letting a 6 win team in. The only one manning up to say it. Ryan Day is whiny and arrogant. He should have just congratulated Clemson on victory last year and moved on. Blaming refs when Ohio State could have put it away on their own is cowardly.

What you are describing is recency bias.

Back in the 1950s Clemson played LSU in the sugar bowl in a game many still consider one of the greatest college football games ever played.

From 1977 through 1991 Clemson was a top 20 program and most of those years a potential national champion.

Clemson is currently 14th in total wins among BCS programs and in a few years will pass Auburn for the number 13 spot. Being a historical top 15 program means you’re pretty #### good. We are not a Johnny come lately.

We are not a huge state school like Ohio State. When I was at Clemson in the 80s our total enrollment was around 12,000 students. All things considered what Clemson has done and what Clemson is doing would be considered by most not just improbable but impossible!

This is the second time OSU gets into the playoff on their history alone and probably going to end the same way.

OSU has been big in the Big 10! Saying that, the Big 10 is not a big deal. Once was, not now. OSU may be the only team worth anything.

History, blah, blah, blah.

The hit last year was targeting all day long. Get over it.

If you Don't like Dabo, it's probably a reflection on your weaknesses. He's out to succeed and make young men succeed. It's sincere and that's why it works.

You may not believe it or understand it, but I really don't care.

Also, if OSU wins, it'll be because the team is fresh from playing half a season. You got your 'gimme', your mulligan, your participation award and that's what pisses people off!

If you're gonna cheat, don't keep score!

Thanks for your comments, I'd like to address one point: Whining. After the 2018 championship I visited bama boards several days and there were no excuses nor whining about bad calls but a quite acceptance that Clemson beat the stuffing out of bama. Even today there are OwhinO fans that won't shut up about bad calls last year. We all agree that there were some iffy calls or lack thereof on both sides (uh.. dirty hits on our QB and receivers). But shut the Heck up, act like big boys. Ohio State owns the championship in whining. Y'all had a great team last year and we certainly shouldn't be overly confident this year.

Clemson has been a top 20 football program for decades

emoji_events [5]

To correct the record, Clemson had been good for many decades before the 1990s. Back in the 50s and 60s, we were kicking butt with the best of them.

In the 70s we played Norte Dame twice and almost beat them with Joe Montana in South Bend (came down to the last minute of the game). From that point until the late 1980s, Clemson was in the thick of NCAA football rankings almost every year, they were just looked over by the snooty programs like Nebraska, Oklahoma, Bama, USC, Mich, OSU, et al. But when we played them in a bowl, we usually won.

Danny Ford took over from Charlie Pell, who took over from Red Parker, who took over from Frank Howard. And we had John Heisman as our coach for a period of time too.

We hit our down period after Danny Ford was wrongly fired. The karma for that mistake was ~20 years wandering in the wilderness while the ACC added FSU who was the dominant team at that time. The timing of events couldn’t have been any worse.

But that was then and this is now. Clemson is back to their rightful, dominant position in the college football world. So just because someone doesn’t know Clemson’s rich football history, it doesn’t meant it didn’t happen or that Clemson’s current success is newfound. Little ole Clemson has always been an upper echelon football program. We just didn’t get the media attention that teams in the major TV markets got. After all, little ole Clemson is off the beaten path in the foothills of little ole South Carolina.

All I can say is it is good to be back! Go Tigers! ????

Honesty starts with yourself. Can Ohio State win against Clemson? This year?

In 2000 and 2001 ( http://www.winsipedia.com/games/south-carolina/vs/ohio-state
) I watched two South Carolina teams who had just been beaten by Clemson beat Ohio State. Not impressive, but there was no doubt Ohio State fans at the games were impressed with themselves.

How long do you call a decade of winning at the highest level of wins in college football history a "phenomenon"? Did you consider that in 2014 when the Buckeyes last won a championship, high school seniors were in 6th or 7th grade. But these kids know Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence.

And quit using "most people". To Ohio State and B1G Nation, "most people" means "all of us" who cannot beat Dabo Swinney or Clemson and it hurts our pride. The the last time Ohio State had a DC like Brent Venables was 1942? Never? So beat Clemson if you can and stop whining.

Clemson beat OSU in 1978, won a national championship in 1981 long before the 90's. I am old enough I can tell you going back before the 90's and after and no one in the south gives a #### about OSU football or the Big 10 other than those of you who have moved here and don't want to go back. It's all about the ACC and SEC in the south. Do you think history only started when you were born?

History is a great topic for discussion on a cold winter's night but it's the present that ranks as important. Clemson may or may not be a "Johnny come lately" in the football world but the fact is that Clemson is currently one of the best programs in collegiate football. The head-to-head meetings with OSU is proof positive that Clemson is the better team. Resting on one's laurels of another era does not score points on the field of play today. I would suggest the traditional football powers take heed, get used to it, Clemson is here to stay.

I don’t blame osu for only playing 6 games, I blame the big 10. I don’t blame osu for the rule changes on qualifying for the big 10 title game, I blame the big 10. I don’t blame osu for the rule change on quarantining, I blame the big 10. The season was botched for them from the get go and it was because of the big 10. There for a presidence should have been set and no team playing less than 10 games should have been considered for the playoffs. I think 10 games is a good number to get a true feel for a team to see how good they are. Now yes osu won every game they played but were they dominate. Not in the least. Fields has looked very bad and may have actually hurt his draft stock coming back rather than helped it. Your D doesn’t look near as dominant as last year. Oline and RBs still look good though. This game will be a big test as to how good your team is.

Also Ryan Day doesn’t seem to be a very good leader. It still bugs him to this day they lost last year and that’s okay. What’s not okay is to continue to bring it up and bring it up and....bring it up. If someone asks question about it say yep we lost but this is a new year. Simple as that move on. I guarantee you it gets brought up again next week during interviews. I’d be willing to bet a lot of money instead of being forward thinking he lives in the past once again gets drawn in and talks about it.

Too many gray days deep into May, make this a dreadful place to live. The Horseshoe inspired numerous Eastern Bloc architects in their lovely designs post WWII. Your governor is named DeWine. That's totally appropriate. I fully understand your little visit here on TigerNet. We don't care about your football history which is just that-history. Have a great rest of the winter. Please last one to leave for Phoenix, turn out the lights.

I pretty much stopped reading the OP’s post when he referred to Clemson as a “Johnny-c-me-lately” football power based upon his personal experience growing up in Ohio in the 90s. Seriously? As you have learned by reading this thread, Clemson has a very long and distinguished football past.

The center of the college football universe today is the 350 mile radius around Atlanta, certainly not the OSU/Mich axis.

I understand all of your neighbors hate Dabo, but they don't speak for most of college football. On the way back from California 2 years ago all I heard was how much other fans liked Dabo. UofSC Jr, yourselves, Oklahoma and other fan bases that fall on the short end of the stick cry sour grapes. You will hate him even more when several other coaches are voting you out of the top 10. Don't worry the committee will keep overrating you year after year though.

Serious question,
Do all you OcryO State Bucknuts wear your jorts all year or only in the spring summer and fall? If not in the winter, do you still wear those jerseys in the winter? Inquiring minds would like to know....
