David Hood - a request

Oct 26, 2014, 9:35 PM

If you can think of a way to phrase this so it doesn't come off as being negative towards Cole, will you ask Chad/Dabo what is the biggest difference between Cole now and the Cole who won the job in the spring/fall camp? I just see no way we are seeing the player who won the competition with Watson in the off season. Thanks for the inquiry.

I'd wager the difference is possibly:

Fans who booed him earlier in the season.
Losing the job to a true freshman.
The pressure of Clemson Nation on his shoulders.
The pressure of knowing he has one season to live the dream.

That hurts every time he tries to cut it loose down the field.

He hurt his non-throwing shoulder.***

Try and throw a football 30 yards on a rope while having to take shots in your shoulder. I promise it doesn't feel good, probably to the point of having to take a little off.

Oct 26, 2014, 9:42 PM

didn't do...it was that Watson was just that much more talented...

Re: Well according to them, it wasn't anything Stoudt did or

Oct 26, 2014, 9:48 PM

You don't figure that out 3 games in, given limited reps. The separation that exists now should have been blatantly obvious in the fall camp if that was the case. I believe the competition was close enough coming out of camp that the staff elected to go with experience. So where/why did the separation occur? Cole is no where the same player he was 2 months ago. Watson has improved and especially proven he can handle the big stage, so I would contribute some of the gap to that.

Chad will answer this question if asked appropriately.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Watson missed a large portion of camp

I don't know...I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious too

Oct 26, 2014, 9:52 PM [ in reply to Re: Well according to them, it wasn't anything Stoudt did or ]

But asking such a question does nothing but incite blame. He would probably immediately want to know why YOU want to know? He'd be put on the defensive, like he was being cross examined. If you want him to stay here, fans and media would be wise not to pester. Places like Tulsa may start to look very appealing.

It doesn't matter now. If it was for seniority's sake, I'd imagine they may have learned their lesson.

Re: I don't know...I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious too

Oct 26, 2014, 10:18 PM

Not trying to incite anything. Chad will answer a question based on the premise of "where is Cole now compared to where he was coming out of camp?" I am a fb coach and played qb and would not take that as being pesky. It's a valid question that could be spun as a positive if so desired.

I think David would rather keep his job.

> I think David would rather keep his job.

like I said- phrased appropriately. It obviously can't come across as player bashing. I wouldn't ask Hood to do that- it would put him in a bad spot and be a waste of time anyways cause they wouldn't address it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

.

Im sure most fans would like to know that answer

Oct 26, 2014, 9:53 PM

And youre right, that difference didnt just take place 3 games into the season, Watson has been the better QB since fall camp

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: David Hood - a request

Oct 26, 2014, 9:53 PM

I don't think they would ever answer this question, although I think it's a valid one. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I would want to ask politely "Has Cole been so good that Nick doesn't deserve a series or two to see if he can provide a spark or different look?" If he stinks it up fine, Cole goes back in. I give him full marks for the win @BC, but last night and Louisville were wretched

Re: David Hood - a request

Oct 26, 2014, 9:54 PM

He played much better against UGA than he has since getting the job back after Watson got hurt. He just doesn't look like the same QB.

Just so you know, DH is getting married this week

Oct 26, 2014, 10:34 PM

So, I doubt he cares about your question.

There is a more important question he will have to answer.

Agree with that lol. Best thing that can happen to a man. Congrats DH!

Deer David, let me field this one.

Oct 26, 2014, 10:39 PM

Cole has lost some of his power due to an injured shoulder. Yeah, it's the left shoulder but it's affect on locating the throw by altering the mechanics which control the horizontal and vertical along with the velocity. Speed and location are off until his shoulder heals and he polishes his mechanics.

Consider that the shoulder is being aggravated daily in practice and on Saturday it's plain tortured. Catch 22?

I have an easy answer for you

Oct 27, 2014, 11:44 AM

We just had a con call with Coach Swinney, and we asked a lot about Cole.

Bullet points from the coach

*The two INTs Saturday were not Cole's fault, they were on the OL

*Cole was the player of the game on offense because of how well he ran the ball

*The passes behind the line of scrimmage are Clemson's running game and don't mean anything where Stoudt is concerned.

So............

I tend to agree with point 1. It's hard to throw the ball when defenders are hitting your arm.

Thanks David. Maybe Chad can offer some insight into the evolution of Cole since camp. I wouldn't expect Dabo to be able to offer much in that area.
