That tweet about Dabo and the AP #1 ranking yesterday:
https://twitter.com/JBradEdwards/status/1297933412918067201
Got me thinking about Dabo vs. some other notable HOF Coaches and how he stacks up. Seems like he's probably a lock for the HOF at some point. There are some interesting guys below with much worse credentials who seem to have gotten in based on longevity... Dabo also has a lot better winning percentage than most of these guys.
Dabo to Date: - 130-31-0 (.807) - 2 National Titles - 6 Conference Titles
Here's how that stacks up with some other HOFers:
Frank Howard - 165-118-12 (.580) - 0 National Titles - 8 Conference Titles
Danny Ford - 121-60-5 (.664), 96-20-4 (.760) At Clemson - 1 National Title - 5 Conference Titles
Jess Neely - 207-176-19 (.515), 43-35-7 (.547) at Clemson - 0 National Titles - 4 Conference Titles (all at Rice)
John Heisman - 148-60-14 (.698), 19-3-2 (.833) at Clemson - 1 National Title - 7 Conference Titles
Bobby Bowden -357-124-4 (.740), 315-98-4 (.760) at FSU - 2 National Titles - 12 Conference Titles
Joe Paterno - 409-136-3 (.749) - 2 National Titles - 3 Conference Titles (Joined Big 10 in 1993)
Bill Snyder - 215-117-1 (.647) - 0 National Titles - 2 Conference Titles

Penn State ended. But, consider Dabo's record, and then realize that at this point in time after all his success, he is not quite ONE THIRD OF THE WAY to having as many victories as Joe Pa. 409 wins is truly a remarkable feat, one that I can't see being challenged by any coach going forward. Nick Saban, after 23 seasons, has "only" 243.

Howard and Neely got in due in large measure to their longevity.
Alvarez and Donnan don't belong in the HOF.
Beamer made it due to longevity and the scope of VT's on his watch.
I'm OK with the other guys on the list.
Dabo is as close to a lock as anyone has ever been at his age. If he keeps winning at the present pace, they will need a room up there and a special designation for him. He's won 69 games in the last five years.

There's really 3 Teirs of Coaches IMO:
Aug 25, 2020, 12:52 PM

|
Tier 1: The Unassailable Greats (Bowden, Paterno, Bryant, etc.)
Tier 2: The Guys Who Coached So #### Long We Let Them In (e.g. Frank Howard)
Tier 3: The Guys Who Turned Bad or Mediocre Programs Into Winners But Never Won A Title (Barry Alvarez, Bill Snyder, Frank Beamer)

Dabo could quit today and be a first ballot HOF'er. I'm not sure there is any debate over that, even from opposition. What he has done at Clemson since about 2011 when you guys steamrolled a pretty good Hokies team not once, but twice is remarkable, and he has done it while Saban was thought to be untouchable. Dabo has done a sight more than touch him. IMO, he has become Saban's nemesis.
And just for correction's sake, I see Tressel's time in Division II football were included in his W-L record. IF you do that for Beamer, his record goes to 280-143-4 and winning percentage to .656. He also won a conference title while at Murray State, so that goes to 8.
And the last poster was right. Beamer didn't win a title and that separates him for sure, but he did change a culture, and I think you got to do that before you win a title. Not many have been able to do what he did at VT, either.
I know you do, but treasure Dabo. He won't be replaced, because you can't replace legends. VT fans have found that out in no uncertain terms the last couple of years. And Dabo is building a hell of a legend at Clemson.

W/Ls but I added those back in for Tressel and Donnan since I figured a national title was relevant to their HOF inclusion.
Beamer is in the same class as guys like Snyder and Alvarez--guys who took a program that was middling and turned it into a consistent winner, even if they never won a Title. Definitely think he deserves inclusion.
