Tuition

Posted: May 16, 2012, 5:31 PM

For regular students the cost to attend Clemson is some
what higher if they are from out of state. Athlets that
are on scholarship does the school pay more for the
student athlete that comes from out of state/ I have never heard an explaination of this

Student-athletes are charged in-state tuition rates.***

I always thought Clemson charged the Ath. Dept. out of state.

I'm pretty sure all school use in-state rates for athletes.***

I am about 99.9% sure Clemson charges in-state tuition rates to student-athletes.

"(chief financial officer for Clemson athletics Katie) Hill said reports on how self-sustaining athletics departments are will vary depending on accounting definitions. Clemson, for instance, grants in-state tuition to athletes so that the scholarship dollars stretch further — a savings of about $2.5 million to the athletics department."

All I know is I pay out of state tuition for my twin daughters...and I have now lost both arms and legs. However, I loved it, they love it and I would do it again...even if it means I won't ever retire.

Hill's statement that "Clemson, for instance, grants in-state tuition to athletes" only applies to scholarship athletes. Out of state walk-ons don't get the tuition break.

If they do get the tuition break Clemson owes me a bunch of money!

CU, along with any other school, can grant in-state rates to whomever they choose. Very often, high-scoring students from out of state are granted in state rates to attract thier high SAT scores. This helps CU climb into the top 50, top 20 or whatever they are looking for. As a SC taxpayer, I have a bit of a problem with this when they are spending my tax dollars to benefit kids (and parents) that never paid a dime of SC income tax. On the other hand, if it attracts great football players at a lower price, I'm fine with it. Situational ethics, I suppose.

I understand your point of view, but living in Charlotte and knowing kids that have benefited from this policy, I am in favor of it. Also, since other states do it too, I think it must balance out to some degree.

I had to laugh at the "somewhat" the difference is about $18k instate to $35k out of state - huge!
