MauldinT's trip up north - a memoir of melancholy
Jul 27, 2018, 1:44 PM
|
|
So, a couple of my kids compete in track and field. They both won the state USATF Junior Olympic state championship and qualified at a regional meet. So, off we headed, up north, to the USATF National Junior Olympic championships in Greensboro, NC.
This ain't bragbook, so not running my mouth about how great my offspring are (but I could.)
Few things:
1. BBQ - I am not sure who lied to the citizens of this yankee state, but whatever you serve as BBQ, is most definitely not BBQ
2. Sheetz - by far the best part of being in a yankee state is stopping at Sheetz. A lot like QT, but seems to be better manned and larger selection of food.
3. Gas seems to be about $0.30 higher per gallon. Is the gas tax higher ? If so, more proof that citizens in these near-socialized states should revolt against their leaders.

I think you could raise the gas tax to $5.00 per gallon and you'd see little to no improvement in our infrastructure.

changes are afoot BUT it will take a while. There are 2-3 big interstate projects in the next 10 years and ALOT of repaving and bridge work that will be happening. That being said, it is the SCDOT, so the long timeline can be thrown out the window from the start, it will take longer.

2-3 year project into a multi-decade project. It took them close to three months to get a red light operational that wasn't but like a 1/2 mile down the road from the SCDOT facility. Which in hindsight was a blessing, because that redlight causes massive traffic back ups now.

In that same time, they built a 4 lane 18 mile toll road from 385 to 85 and have already repaved it twice.

job. There was a pretty big pothole by our house that I watched them fill monthly for almost four years until they finally came through and paved the road. You'd think it would have been cheaper and easier just to strip patch it and be done with it. Keep in mind, this was about 3 miles from the actual SCDOT dispatch facility or whatever you call it.

Access was in pieces two weeks ago and what wasn't had trucks and trailers parked up and down the road. First time I ever launched there. Limited space means limited farkups. I would go to Remley's just to watch the craziness. They could probably do a reality show from boat landings.

GA, that means that in 20+ years we will get our existing roads up to the level of NC and GA roads now. 20 years underfunded and then you get the same funding as the neighboring states. Point is our roads will always suck to the tune of 20 years of no gas tax increases over our neighbors.

especially with the tax base here in SC. Infrastructure in the state, whether talking roads, trails, waterlines, sewer lines, power transmission, etc is all in need of ALOT of attention. To some extent, that is what I do for my job. We will be behind forever though.

And Lexington County has some of the worst roads in SC
Jul 27, 2018, 3:14 PM
|

And SC has some of the worst roads in the country. So Lexington proposed a penny tax, just like Columbia did. FWIW - Columbia's penny tax has been shut down till further notice because of mismanagement of the money. ANYWAY, Lexington came up with a list of road and transportation infrastructure improvements to be paid for with the penny tax. I thought it was great.
THEN, the list started changing. Soon you had park funding, bike paths, library funding, water and sewer funding, etc. And the one ROAD project that would have helped ME THE MOST, was cancelled as that other stuff went into the plans for the $$$. End of the day it didn't pass. I PROMISE you it would have passed IF they kept the list of projects LIMITED to road and transportation projects.
But these penny tax initiatives are going to be more common to pay for the catch-up spending that is needed.

there are more DIRT ROADS in that county than any place I ever lived.
I even lived on one (obviously by choice, as I enjoy the rural lifestyle) but dang there were a bunch of them. Some that are 10 miles long or longer. Made owning a Jeep lots of fun.

In Greenville, they seem to be maximizing billable hours by doing everything but the things that would have an immediate positive impact on traffic congestion. I think they've rerouted and lane shifted everything into oblivion in an attempt to drag this project out for as long as possible.
Adding two lanes to both the north and south bound of 85 north of Woodruff Rd. would have done wonders, and they had the equipment out there to do it....but nope, we'll just let everyone pile up trying to get on to 385 and Woodruff and add the lane shifts as a final fugg you hope you die.

Attempt to get things done in a timely manner. I don’t see that in SC. Georgia has nice 6 lane highways going through basically the middle of nowhere, but they’re ready for future traffic flow.
If I thought an increase in the gas tax would actually go toward the roads, I’d be all for it. I don’t think that though.
