Herbstreit says Clemson could have scored 50+ against Gamecocks |
The famous 'Never again' mantra by Gamecock players turned into 'again' as Clemson dominated 34-10 on Saturday night.
It appears that the Tigers are going to have the upper hand in this rivalry for a while as Swinney's played an impressive 71 players against the Gamecocks. With so many talented young players getting experience and only a handful of seniors on the Clemson's roster, they are poised to make a strong run next season at five in a row against their in-state rival. ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit was extremely impressed by Clemson and thought the offense could have hung at least 50 points on the Gamecocks. "I thought this was one that was sneaky for Clemson with the big ACC championship game," Herbstreit said on an ESPN podcast. "South Carolina, even though it's a rivalry game, maybe I underestimated that part of it. I thought maybe they knew they could beat South Carolina. On the road, I thought it might be a little closer than the way they played. To their credit, if they kept their foot on the accelerator, it would have been fifty-something to nothing. Just a complete domination and now they come in with a ton of momentum. I mentioned how I would put Auburn No. 1. I think the committee will have Clemson at No. 1 and we will see how that plays out on Saturday night." Herbstreit knows that it all starts at Clemson with solid quarterback play. "Kelly Bryant is the key. He threw the ball really well, very accurately and coming into that game he was throwing a lot of short passes but I think against South Carolina, especially in this ACC Championship, the ability to get the ball thrown down the field will be a big part of it." Bryant completed 23-for-34 passes for 272 yards with two passing touchdowns and one interception against South Carolina.
