WATCH: Watson sees 'special' Lawrence continuing Clemson dynasty

by - Staff Writer -

Deshaun Watson got an early look at Trevor Lawrence before the fellow Peach State product started taking aim at his high school records.

While Watson rewriting Clemson’s record books, he caught a glimpse of what a would-be Clemson commit-then-signee-then-national-championship QB could do in the offseason training circuit.

“He’s special. I’ve been watching Trevor since high school,” Watson said on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ Thursday. “During 7-on-7 camps - he’s from Cartersville, Georgia, which is about an hour and 15 (minutes) from Gainesville, so I’ve been watching him.

“He broke half of my records in Georgia and now he’s come to the same university I was at and doing the same things I was able to do. He’s going to be a special guy and keep his head straight with his decisions.”

Lawrence topped Watson’s Georgia high school records for passing touchdown and yards over four seasons as a starter at Cartersville. He recently earned the Archie Griffin Award for the nation’s MVP after postseason acton, throwing for three touchdowns and over 300 yards in a 44-16 win over Alabama.

That win clinched a second national title in three seasons for Dabo Swinney’s program - and Watson isn’t shying away from labeling this run a dynasty.

“For sure. The things that coach Swinney is bringing to that university,” Watson said. “The recruits that are coming in. The things they are doing on the field each and every year. It’s one of the top - if not the best program in the country.”
