Why have Clem DTs been so successful as Pros but our DEs haven't?

The hit rate on Clemson Defense Tackles in the pros has been remarkably high particularly under Dabo. Big Dex, C. Wilkins, DJ Reader, G. Jarrett have been absolute studs and many others have been solid contributors. However, even though we've had very productive Defensive Ends on the college level, they can't seem to carry it over into the pros. Beasley had one good year and then flamed out. Many others have disappointed despite being high draft picks. Anybody have any theories as to why?

Yeah good question and very true. I think one of the biggest factors is scheme. We have by and large run a 4-3 with a lot of our “dudes” being the 6’4, 260-270 type who then end up getting to the pros and maybe aren’t big enough to put their hand in the dirt in the league or quick enough to come off the edge as a rusher. So they don’t really fit the 3-4 that almost everyone in the NFL is running. Beasley would’ve been fast enough for that, and he had a couple good seasons, so I’m not sure the best explanation for his fan-out in the league, but that’s just a thought.

Because those run stuffers are infinitely more talented. They're the best of the best.

It goes way back in our history of being a dominant defense.

Take your list and add William Perry , Michael Dean Perry , Brenston Buckner, Chester McGlockton and others

That's where we have ( buttered our bread ) in gaining the reputation as DLU

This is where the top talent often lands out of high school

That's not the case with DE. We get a hit now and then but we're inconsistent there.

For evidence of that look no further than our recent depth issues at this position

No clue, but what you have to have as in interior lineman is size and we have had that. DEs are just such a speed position that the players come in all shapes and sizes but they can all run.
