What would you have done?

Stopped by a store on the way to work to get a little cash from the ATM. Withdrew $40 but noticed $60 was in the slot. I wasn't sure if $20 was there before starting or if the ATM dispensed it with my transaction.

So, would you take the money and run, leave it there, or tell the employee?

WRONG BOARD MORAN!!

That means that you just gave it to the next person that walked up. I don't steal and I absolutely hate a thief, but it's not a bad thing to take what you find. I'm sure it belonged to somebody, but the chance of the person that left it there getting it back are V E R Y slim to none. I would have took it but if somebody coming back would've ask me about it I would have handed it over and told he/she they almost lost it!!!

Here's what happened to me. I was at my bank's drive-thru several years ago. I noticed two cars in front of me grabbing $20 bills and, at first, wondered if the wind had blown their money or what. So, when I got my turn, several $20 bills came flying out with my original withdrawal. The cars in front of me took off with that extra money, but I could not in good conscience do the same. I reported it, returned the money, and received a huge thank you.

Back when I was a grad student I was fortunate on days when I could rub two dimes together. I had probably just celebrated a birthday because I had a check and a $100 bill that I wanted to deposit (a big birthday for sure). I went inside and handed the bank teller my deposit. After making the deposit, the teller and I thanked each other and I left. There were other people around so it was fairly busy that day.

When I got back to my car I discovered that I was still holding the $100 bill in my hand. I checked the receipt the teller had given me and I saw that she had credited my account for the entire deposit (check plus the $100).

I went inside and went back to that specific teller. I handed the teller the $100 and explained what had happened. The man in the next teller line next to me seemed quite surprised to say the least. The teller seemed appreciative.

Exactly, CBProf did the right thing and likely saved that teller's job, or at least a written reprimand.

We had a teller (I work in finance) give a customer $8,000 instead of the $6,000 they requested. The customer got home, realized the error, and returned the extra two grand. Had they not returned it, I can assure you the teller would have lost her job.

Since 1964, I have used credit cards, but after moving to Chicago in 1986 and working in a downtown office with a schedule full of airport trips and limos, I saw what I thought was the need for one of those new (at the time) cash debit card.

The first time I used it, I made what i thought was a withdrawal for $100, but actually received $120 (and the receipt said $100).

I went to the bank, gave them the extra $20 and closed the account. When they asked why, I said "If it can give me extra, it can also short change me - and you might not be as honest as me.".... <img border=">">

Though I have a couple of emergency debit cards for emergency travel, I have not used one of those cards since 1986.

I never use an ATM. If cash is needed I go into bank and face to face do a transaction.

If for any reason in the future I absolutely needed an ATM for an emergency and extra money came out then I would return it to the bank and check to clarify my initial transaction.

If something is not owed to me or given to me legitimately I don't need it and don't want it.

Call the ATM owner. Most of those gas station arms are privately owned and operated and they usually put their businesses contact info on the machine somewhere.

That way if the person before did get shorted a 20 there is a record of it so the owner can get that person paid properly.

When I was a child, I accompanied my great uncle (he was probably in his 70’s) to the bank to cash a fairly large check. As he left the teller and walked outside, he realized that she had made an error, so he went back to have her correct the mistake.

However, the teller was vey nasty to him and insisted that she would not make any changes once he left the building. She was terribly rude. My uncle shrugged his shoulders, turned aside, and said over his shoulder, “Okay, but the mistake was in my favor.” Apparently, she had included a few extra bills in his stack.

That’s a tough choice. I think I would have told the employee what happened and left it with them. If it was at a bank I would definitely take it inside and give it to a teller but at a store you are probably just tipping the employee, which also isn’t the worst thing to do with it.

I probably would have taken it since I know if I were the person I would assume it was gone and would never return to look for it. However, I usually give away found money like that so that is what I would have ultimately done. I might pay for someone's Starbucks, give $60 extra at church, or whatever opportunity presented itself. Just leaving there presents the next person with your same conundrum.

That way if they came back looking for it, it would be in the machine for them to get back out. I'd be afraid to give it to an employee bc they would most likely pocket it thinking its free money and would be easy to deny if someone came back looking for it.
