Big Basin Vineyards 2018 “Lester Family Vineyard” Pinot Noir

Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, this vineyard is on the ocean side of the southern Santa Cruz mountains, overlooking Monterrey Bay.

20 year old vines, from a clone called Mt Eden Swan 115. Fermented with natural yeasts, sees 18mo in “barrel” not specified type or new/old and bottled unfined & unfiltered. 280 case production.

It’s a pretty color, quite light and garnet, and noticeably a little cloudier than what I’m used to. Very expressive & bright nose on P&P, surprised me honestly. Lots of ripe cherry. On the palate it’s light and lively, nicely balanced structure, light on the tannins but they’re present and pleasant. Fairly linear, lots of primary flavors of cherry and raspberry, some cherry candy, maybe rose petal? The lightest touch of oak. Mouth-puckering acidity that makes you want more. You’re not going to confuse this for your Burgs, but it’s probably the best CA Pinot I’ve had so far (that number isn’t huge to be honest).

It tastes like what I wish Beaujolais tasted like, if that makes sense. I don’t think this is going to get much better, drink it if you have it. I’ll give it…. 91 points? Delicious, and look forward to drinking the other two of these, and the other cuvée I got from the same maker.

Pairing this with some hot wings from Wings N Ale, a filthy & delicious local haunt.

I think their single barrel series is pretty fantastic.

Nice - I'll have to check that out. And, can you find another descriptive word for color besides 'garnett' :).

Haven't really drank much this year, and it's been whisky when I have, but I generally post it when I find a good wine.

I did just have a really nice tea. African Autumn (Rooibos). Mixed it with a shot of pomegranate juice, a teaspoon of honey, and about ten blueberries.

Have you had any of the Pinot Noirs from the Northwest - Washington and Oregon? I'm not a big Pinot drinker, but I've really liked the ones I've had from those states.

Dude yes, Domaine Drouhin from Dundee Hills in Willamette makes really great stuff. Serene and Patricia Green also spectacular.

Had a really good one at a wine party a little while back from Walla Walla, but I can't remember the name.

I certainly agree with the three Oregon Pinots you listed, Patricia Green, Serene and Drouhin are all great wineries. I tend to drink mostly Oregon Pinot, my current house wine is from Ken Wright. A winery local to Eugene that I like is Broadley, they make a very nice pinot.

Also, I'd recommend staying away from most 2020 Oregon Pinots due to the impact forest fires had on the grapes.

I don't typically drink during the week. Last bottle I popped was a Tempranillo.

Another recommendation by a neighbor. It was ok..

El Jefe Grande. 3.7 Stars on Vivino, I gave it 3.3

too fruity for me. red fruit, in particular, cherries

I think other people would like it, and it was light enough to drink casually. Did not pair very well with the steak, for me in particular.

I would imagine that would not go well with steak

I try to go with the driest Merlot I can get my hands on when I’m drinking wine with steak.

Recommendations welcomed! TIA.

Have you tried any right bank Bordeaux? Try something from St. Emilion
