that was actually a TIE, at Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Mass in 1901. In the resulting 18 hole playoff, Willie Anderson shot 85 and WON, besting Alex Smith by a single shot.
The US Open sometimes sets up its courses with a par of 70, and other times with a par of 71 or 72. It depends on the venue that particular year. But, even if you take Myopia Hunt Club at a par of 72 in 1901, the winning score of 331 was FORTY THREE OVER PAR.
I think it safe to say, that is a dubious record that will stand FOREVER. For comparison, since World War II, the highest winning score in relation to par was in 1963, when Julius Boros shot +9 at The Country Club, in Brookline, Mass.
The most well known bloodbath was probably in 1974, in Mammary Neck (sp), New York. It came to be called "The Massacre at Winged Foot", with Hale Irwin winning the first of his eventual three US Open titles at +7. Jack Nicklaus tied for 10th, at FOURTEEN OVER PAR!

Interesting information!
I’ve always wondered about how the scores differed from way back. 1. That must have been a BRUTAL set up to that golf course 2. Obviously, you didn’t have the specialization of golf practice/swing coaches as you do now.
Very interesting 76er®!

Playing Myopia next Thursday! I'll bring equipment from 2024 and not 1901, though. ">

Oh, I also get to play The Country Club the day after Myopia. Love my Northeastern friends. ">

I'm not sure what the winning score was, but the most brutal day in memory was the year Tom Kite won at Pebble Beach. It was so windy that it was just about impossible playing conditions. I have played Monterey Country Club when one of the par 3s right on the water, you had to hit your shot 25 yards over the water to land anywhere near the green.
