Found this link of a Penn St. guy breaking down his scheme. Though a small sampling, a much needed upgrade is on the way!

His comments about Tom Allen were as follows:

1 - This is HUGE loss for Penn State.

2 - He needs to figure out how to defend the pass better. When the front 4 or 6 didn't get to the QB, opposing offenses had WRs running around wide open.

This is a interesting observation considering that Penn State ranked 31st nationally in passing yards allowed at 193 yards per game (Clemson ranked 54th at 213 yards per game).

I don't care what type of defense you run, if you don't get pressure on the QB and play a soft zone in the secondary, lining-up 10 to 15 yards off the LOS and not jamming the WRs at the line, very few defenses are going to be successful. A good QB and good WRs will find the holes in the zone. This was a HUGE problem for Clemson all during 2024, but in many cases Goodwin was only rushing 3.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Penn State’s first two scores against SMU were pick sixes. Secondary must be at least ok. But the SMU QB was under big time pressure too.
I love to see us put pressure on QBs. To me a sack is almost as exciting as a TD. Add in a fumble and it can be just as big. The home game vs Auburn a few years ago when we had 11 sacks was so much fun. Hope we get back to that kind of attacking defense.

My son graduated from Penn St. in 2012. He is actually a bigger Clemson fan but he does keep up with PSU. He said the defense this year was much improved and was really unhappy to hear Allen was leaving. He said the same thing that many others have, that Franklin seems to be very difficult to work with and play for.
