Thoughts and observations on baseball thus far.

* We need to give Knaak a litte more run support in order to save Mahlstead for the Saturday or Sunday game.

* Lack of fall hitting due to shoulder surgery, coupled with lack of production behind him, has Cam stretching his strike zone a tad bit too much. This will get better, and he will get hot at the right time.

* Preist needs to understand his role and be more aggressive at the plate. When he was hitting in the 4 hole, he was watching too many first pitch fastballs. I understand quality at bats, and working pitchers, but I also understand knowing who you're protecting in a lineup.

* Jarrell hits the ball hard and has had some tough luck. He could go on a tear at any point this season. Especially if he learns to layoff the slider off the plate.

* Bailey is a revelation, although a small sample sized one. I love his fire and competitiveness. If he gets an umpire that loves the edges, he could be even harder to touch. Umpires love guys that work fast and with command. They tend to benefit pitchers like that with borderline calls.

* Crieghton needs to hit more. He's essentially a right-handed Listi.

*Listi is an on base machine but tends to get anchored at 1st. Would love to see him force the issue on the field.

*Paino really needs to develop a better two-strike approach. He tries to kill every pitch.

*Gaffney is an elite defender at 1st and makes extremely difficult picks look routine. He is a very cerebral player. I think he will get hot at the plate soon. He showed a lot better approaches at the plate the last couple of weeks.

*Purify will be a 1st round pick next year and have a long pro career. He is an absolute freak of an athlete with a high baseball IQ. He sometimes gets penalized for an error on a ball that most 2nd baseman wouldn't even get a glove on.

* When Knaak has all his stuff working he is Greg Maddox reincarnated.

* Darden needs to have a clean 1st inning most of the time to get his mind settled. He seems to get rattled pretty easily and the wheels fall off at that point.

* GT is one of the best hitting teams in the country and Burress is probably the best pure college hitter I've seen since Kahlil Greene.

* Losing to Coastal may benefit us later. The win against us could weigh heavily towards them hosting a regional, thus not being the 2 seed in ours. That could potentially set up a super-regional matchup between us and them, thus avoiding a SEC opponent in the Super's.

* Am I the only one taking notes during mid-weeks at opposing pitchers that could be potential transfer targets? We have faced a lot of great, young mid-major arms.

Someone has been paying attention. I’ve always liked the bunt with two men on and no outs, but our lineup has a lot of hits in it, so I can see hitting away. If we could just avoid digging ourselves a big hole to get out! 2out of 3 in each series so far is very good but we need a couple sweeps. Maybe start that streak this weekend. Go tigers.

I agree with this 100%, my only takeaway thus far is that I would say about every regular player is about as good as they are going to be (without mechanical or gameplan changes, looking at you Paino and Priest).

Cam has done way better recently, I think he understands now that he doesn't have the protection he did in previous years. So far, he leads the team in walk rate and has the third lowest strikeout rate (20.9% and 14.9% respectively). Behind him, like you said, Priest needs to become more aggressive, and has every tool to be successful, he just waits too long for a good pitch that will never come and rolls over to second base. Right now, his BABIP is the lowest amongst qualified batters, which if he can look to swing first pitch, he will hit the ball much better and erase some of that bad luck (4/5 of his home runs this year have come within the first two pitches of his AB's and two on the first pitch).

I think Darden got caught out this weekend due mainly to the wind honestly. This is the first game all year he's given up more flyballs than grounders, mixed with the wind tunnel GT's stadium had led to homeruns flying all over the place. Right now, he's sitting at a 5.85 ERA, and depending on which predictive stat you want, most of them show that he'll probably settle out at around a 4.50 to 5.00 ERA, which sounds bad but over 6 innings gets you between 3 and 4 earned runs, completely beatable with our late-game bullpen options.

I will say at this point B.J. Bailey is more than a small sample size overall, as he's third on the team in innings and batters faced. But as a starter he definitely has a small sample size as you stated. If he can keep up his performances, with a little regression (I don't know a single starting pitcher that can maintain a 0.65 ERA), he could easily be the 2nd best starter behind Knaak, and maybe even surpass him, depending on how you value advanced metrics (FIP, SIERA, kwERA, etc.).

Great comments. I was wondering if they keep stats for a pitcher’s strike vs balls thrown for bases empty and runner on 1st/2nd. My impression is that is where Darden and LeGuernic are struggling. Distracted by the on-base runners seems to be a mental hurdle for them to overcome. I recall Coach See having that problem with the Tiger pitchers.

I don't know that off-hand and I wish it was a simple stat to tabulate, but overall Darden's strike % is 58% and Leguernic's is 60%, which is lower than Bailey's 64% and Knaak's 66%. I'm sure somewhere tracks that but at least watching the games it definitely feels like they try and nibble the corners, miss, and then try and get back into the count and either 1) lose the count and walk the batter or 2) groove one down the middle and get rocked. Darden has 3.90 walks/9 and Leguernic has a 5.68 bb/9, which is way worse than Knaak's 2.95 bb/9 and Bailey's 3.25 bb/9.

I think they're trying too hard to get looking strikeouts rather than hitting their spot and trying to induce weak contact, especially in Darden's case. It seems the last few games they let one too many runners on and immediately give up a big hit because they can't throw any more balls. They just need to focus on hitting their spots and getting ahead 0-1 before they start worrying about striking the batter out. They both have great stuff, I just hope Bakich and Belanger start emphasizing strike throwing rather than strikeout throwing.

A few comments about your post… and I agree with you on a lot..
1) run support for knaack is going to be hard because that’s usually the best arm we will face(on Friday)…plus we gave him plenty of run support against gt and he didn’t do anything with it.
2)agree about priest he needs to be more aggressive and has so much potential
3) Jarrell does hit a lot of hard balls but seems to be feast or famine and we will usually know what kind of game you will get from him based off his first at bat(if he hits hit hard he typically will the whole game)
4) Bailey was phenomenal Saturday and I thought he got squeezed a lot early in that game.. was surprised to see him throw that many pitches when he hasn’t been stretched out that long yet this year so hopefully he can stay healthy!
5) agree about creighton definitely needs to be hitting over max laddie and bissetta against lefties.. speaking of bissetta he is pressing and looks terrible at the plate lately hopefully he can start seeing it like last year
6) Paino has one of the worst 2 strike approaches I’ve ever seen… he refuses to sit back on a breaking ball and go the other way with it so hopefully the coaches are working on that with him or he will be hitting below .200 pretty soon
7) agree about Gaffney and listi
8) disagree about purify… yes he is a great athlete with great defensive ability I’m just not sold on his bat yet.. that ball he hit off the wall Saturday against gt backside was awesome but unfortunately don’t see that much out of him..he is not someone I want at the plate when the game is on the line
9)Darden is leaving the ball up and not as accurate therefore he his walking more and gettin hit more his last couple starts… hopefully he figures it out or he will be off the weekend rotation too

I am sure since we have a 26-5 record and are ranked in the Top 10, Coach Bakich really appreciates your thoughts.

I posted my thoughts and observations on a FAN board, as a FAN, for other FANs. A FAN forum I’m sure EB doesn’t check or monitor. Had I wanted him to see them, I would have just talked to him after a game. With that being said, I’m pretty sure he is well aware of anything I stated. Most of it was pretty obvious to anyone with any baseball acumen, let alone an elite D1 coach such as EB.

I don’t think this team nor its fanbase is, or should be scared of anyone, but recent history with SEC seeding in our regional has not fared well for us. Law of averages means that we will probably see an SEC team in our regional every year.
There are 16 regionals. No conference can be represented twice in the same regional. The SEC, like it or not, will always get 11-12 teams in the tourney. That means there’s only 4-5 regionals where they are not represented. Couple the fact that we play in the 2nd best baseball conference and no other ACC team can be in our regional, doesn’t leave a lot of options for the #2 seed. All this is obviously based on us hosting. Should we not host, Coastal hosting is about as close to us being the home team as anywhere else we could be the #2 seed.
Can we beat SEC teams? Yes, no doubt. To make it to Omaha and win in Omaha, you need pitching depth. Not having to burn through an entire staff to get there is very beneficial. Hence not facing a SEC or ACC lineup before Omaha is very beneficial.
