So, what do y'all make of these comments from Dabo re: the portal??

To quote Dabo:
“We know what our needs are. It isn’t like it is some big secret, but I will let everybody know,” he said. “I will let (the media) advertise that for me. I will make sure y’all put that out there so people will know.”
“We are going to know what we need. We know what we are filling high school-wise, and you know who is leaving and whatever your retention situation is. Who goes pro? So in January, you know this is our gap. Nothing has changed for us as far as what our approach is. What puts us in the portal is not getting the best high school kid that we want, or a kid decommits late, you can’t replace him, like happened last year. We went and got Will Heldt.”
I think Dabo is going to make some moves in January. The question is, will it be enough?

Traditionally Dabo has just gone further down his board and taken fallback kids out of HS. This is how the really anti-portal crowd has been able to fabricate the argument about Clemson not having spots available for portal kids. Obviously you arent going to have spots available if you choose not to.
How much that approach changes is the major factor here. And we should get an answer pretty soon because there have been plenty of whiffs and decommits in this cycle.

Agree, we’ll see if it’s fall backs or portal use very soon. We’ve already seen some fall back takes/offers. Either way though, if we aren’t willing to pay market price for high school or portal kids we’ll continue to get lesser talent. Maybe that’s just where we are money wise and Clemson doesn’t want to say it out loud.

I don’t see him changing his attitude about portal use. More mediocrity to come due to his stubbornness to adapt.

and that is the problem. The team needs more competition. I think there is a coziness in our approach where the starters and key players fee very secure where they are. I think bringing in some talent from elsewhere would ramp up the competition and hunger of this group.

We need to be in the QB market. Not convinced we have the guy we need on the current roster. Maybe use a quarter of the game this weekend to get a look at Denson.

I’m sure hoping that Dabo follows through on his comments about playing Denson Saturday if they’re in position to put him in. If they have a comfortable lead at the half I would play him the entire 2nd half and have the starters on offense on the field with him for the full 3rd quarter. He already knows what he’s got for the most part with CV. I’m pulling for the Freshman because “if” you believe what you hear about him, he could be the answer and the best option for 2026.

If you listened, you would have heard that using the Portal is based on Scholarship numbers and that is the same at every school. This year, it is even harder as 105 will be the new scholarship number instead of 85.
