Alabama (13) and Florida (16) were cheated and didn’t get a regional host spot.
If we use RPI and the conventional thinking of past years we can perhaps see where they go. Southern Miss was the lowest RPI to get a host spot so Alabama could go there. Logically, lowest 1 seed gets the highest 2 seed and the geography works (this seems to be fairly high on the why are they in this region question).
So, Oregon is RPI 17 and that’s too far to travel, and the same logic follows for RPI 15 UCLA. FSU is 14, so it’s a maybe but they did play during the regular season so let’s skip them. Ole Miss at 12 is the same conference and that’s just not what we do having two teams in the same conference play in a regional. So that’s also a no for Tennessee (11) and LSU (10).
Clemson at RPI 9. Ding ding, we have a winner. Florida goes to Clemson.
I guess you play who you have to play but sometimes it feels like the logic that sends Florida to Clemson instead of to Oregon is discarded when Georgia gets Cal Poly as their 2 seed.
