Random, but what's your all-time best starting five in the NBA?

Here's mine:
Point: Steph 2: Jordan Small F: Bird Power F: Lebron Center: Shaq
Was talking with some young whippasnappas who don't understand that things existed before 2005, which compelled me to put this in writing. lol ... I swear they each almost got a throatpunch for suggesting that Kobe was better than Jordan.
Would anyone make changes to this?

Magic Jordan Pippen Bird Olajuwon
Might not necessarily be the best 5 players of all time, but if you’re putting a team together to win games - which means you have to defend, and there is only one basketball - this is my team. Pippen can guard 4 positions, and he doesn’t have to “get his” to be happy. Magic can score and distribute. Jordan - please. Bird can score and distribute and is not scared of the last shot. Olajuwon thought not the force of Shaq, is just as effective, and he’s much more athletic and versatile than Kareem.
2nd group Steph Kobe LeBron Barkley Shaq

Olajuwon gets overlooked on these best-of lists all the time. But Shaq was so dominant in his prime. Hard for me to take anyone over him when he was brushing guys off him like flies when he was at his peak with the Lakers.
I didn't even think of Pippen as the SF. You're right about his defense, though.

So many great players. But I think you have to choose the time frame to go with the team. I think that the way the game is played would make you adjust your roster.
If we are talking about the late 80s early 90s with anything goes on Defense, I dont pick Steph Curry. He is a great player (and I love watching him shoot the ball), but he would not survive the defense of the Detroit Pistons. They would kill him. YOU had to be extremely tough like a Jordan, Bird, Pippen. You just had to be. I honestly think players like Kobe and Steph, being consistently hit hard/ bumbed it would get to them/ throw them off their game. Again, not trying to be disrespectful, to me it was just a different game in the late 80s/ early 90s.
Todays game, I dont recognize it. The pace of it/ there is no defense that I can see when I do take a minute and watch it. I assume the high scoring is related to the fact that they call a foul on everything. So again the time frame, to me plays a role in the selection.
But for fun, my picks would be, Magic, Jordan, Bird, Lebron, Duncan. I dont think Duncan was a dominate center, but I think he could play 3 different positions, get back on defense quickly and hit any shot inside the 3 point line. He could rebound just enough, and I think his body holds up better than Karem and Olajuwon. I just dont remember Duncan having the back issues that the other 2 had.
The other 4 can hit any shot as well, and they can all play 3 positions or more on both sides of the floor. My 6th man would be Kobe.

If you could put the tougher culture of Magic, Isaiah Thomas, Jordan, etc all around Lebron instead of the dumpster fire pussified culture that we have now, I think Lebron's build and skill would carry him to a great career in an earlier era.

Steph Curry wouldn't have made a roster back when they beat on guys. Steph is an amazing shooter, but real basketball finds your cracks and takes away your game unless you are a hard dude.

Hard to argue. I'll go Top 10 with a focus on team Defense and cohesiveness.
1st Team: PG - Magic Johnson SG - Michael Jordan SF - Larry Bird PF - Hakeem Olajuwon Center - Wilt Chamberlain
2nd Team: PG - Steph Curry SG - Kobe Bryant SF - Scottie Pippen PF - Tim Duncan Center - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Backups: Bill Russell David Robinson Scottie Pippen Lebron James

Point: Steph 2: Jordan Small F: Lebron Power F: Duncan Center: Olojuwan (Jordan said he is the best all_time as well, so there's that). He owned Shaq.
2nd team
PG. Magic SG. Kobe SF. Larry Bird Power.. Karl Malone I guess Center..Shaq or Kareem. I can't decide
Also, Lebron could be the best PG all time as well if that's all he played.

All those rings were NOT a coincidence. For that same reason, Lebron would not be in my starting five. I would make a case for Kevin McHale, just to preserve that uncanny connection that he and Larry Legend seemed to have. And yes, I realize my starting five has three Celtics in it. They are MY starting five, not anybody elses. Jordan and Bird on the same team? UNbeatable. Curry would be almost superfluous.

Depends on how old you are.
How about not making dream teams? Who were the best starting five actually fielded as a team?
I think the best starting five ever were the Celtics during the Larry Bird years. Dennis Johnson (PG), Danny Ainge (SG), Larry Bird (SF), Kevin McHale (PF), and Robert Parish (C)

MJ and Steph, and I'm building the rest from there. Steph may not be considered a top 5 player all time, but he's the best shooter in NBA history (and he's way more than just a 3pt specialist), and I want that on my team without question.
I'm not sure about the other 3 spots.
