What a Clemson loyalist and businessman who loved those Tigers and Students alike.
Great late night runs to Dan’s by Rat Cadets in the 50’s for cheeseburgers & fries would have been impossible if he closed early.
As mentioned Dan took paper I.O.U’s. When you were broke & hungry.
His shop was located on the main corner opp Bowman Field and one or two doors to the left of the former Sub Shop, I believe.
He had a bad kitchen fire in early to mid 60’s and set up tables out on the sidewalk Parisian style and cranked out the food til he rebuilt inside..plus the football administration had him catering to them and events.

Larry did stick in the NFL. He played for the Packers for 4 seasons. That’s pretty good in my book.

Don't think that is the '50s. I don't think he had the space all the way to the corner on the left until later.

In the middle 60's there was a TV at "Hamburger Dans". Few TVs were on campus. I can remember the crowd to see the new Batman TV show.

I've been around for a long time, and Dan had the best burgers I have ever eaten. Those who never ate a Dan's burger missed something special. His burgers were huge for 35 cents in the 1960s.
The fire at Dan's happened a couple of days before I arrived as a freshman in 1963, and many of the pictures on his wall of Clemson athletes were destroyed. Dan was cooking burgers on the sidewalk a few days later and was back inside of the restored building within several months.
No person ever loved Clemson more than Dan Gentry, and students never had a better friend. I had the pleasure of sitting near him for some baseball games.

Absolutely the best hamburger and fries I have ever eaten. Many a late night run to Dan's. He had a couple of pinball machines, not the flipper kind, 5cents a play or more to increase # of games won. One if my friends spent more time playing that pin ball machine than he did in class. I won't say any more about that machine but it was probably the main reason my friend flunked out.
Dan was a great guy. Always a smile on his face. He must have worked 12 hours a day.

burgers for upperclassmen.
In fact I despised the trips so much, I never made a kid make the same trip for me after my freshman year. I actually liked the walk there to sit and enjoy his burgers and got to know him fairly well. If I ever went in my cheerleading uniform, he never would charge me and had a photo taken of the two of us.
