MLB would have to stop drafting HS players. The best baseball talent out of HS playing in college ball for 3 yrs would help. That won’t happen. The sport does have the advantage of its season mostly avoiding overlap with MLB, but tv doesn’t see the payback with televising southern baseball over college basketball so it’s really stuck as a niche sport. The availability of streaming platforms is probably the best you can expect for building fan support.

The only thing I can think of on top of the drafting high schoolers is a prospect rights ownership structure like Hockey. Kids get drafted then can continue to play for Canadian Major or US college. The prospects rights are owned through the eligibility of college or junior and then must be signed once finished. The issue of signing bonuses etc .would need to be adjusted. As you said the best prospects never make it to college, which is unlike every other sport.

Postseason is where the excitement is for most (casual) viewers. There lots of discussion on expanding and restructuring the postseason

Well .... The is not completely true. There are a lot of great high school players that value education and they have their signing bonus to skip college very high so therefore they don't get drafted. The MLB still has more players that played in college than didn't. College players that get drafted make it to The MLB faster and more often than players who didn't play college as a whole.

There are a lot of college coaches that think the MLB should do away with a lot of the minor league teams because double A ball is on the same competition level as SEC or ACC baseball. Anything below that and he should be getting an education.

It is a fact that the higher your signing bonus is the more opportunities your are going to get to make it to The Show.

There are a lot of MLB owners/organizations that would like to do away a few levels of baseball and (much like the NFL) let the colleges be there developmental program. I think this will happen, just not sure of the time frame. But colleges need to actually develop players! They are really handicapped in this regard because of the way they count playing time towards a redshirt. In football you can play in 1/4 of the regular season games AND postseason play and still keep your redshirt. This keeps players happy and you develop players with game experience. In baseball, you take ONE swing or throw ONE pitch, or filed ONE ball your redshirt is gone. NCAA screwed this one up and I don't know why coaches haven't lobbied harder for a change?

I really like this idea. Draft the player and hold his rights. Then go to college, and have the MLB fund the NIL/Rev share for their drafted players. This could get the pro fan bases more locked in on college ball. And let’s be honest, college ball is a better TV product than the minors, so watching your favorite prospects is more accessible.

I understand draw backs to this, such as the academic arguemwnt while the mlb is paying for a player to develop as a baseball player, but in theory, great idea

It's a good idea in theory until you reach the postseason and your handcuffed because your ace Friday night starter can't pitch more than 4 innings a week because the Yankees want to avoid damage to his arm.

I don’t think there’s much hope. Kids don’t want to watch or play baseball much anymore. It’s a really boring game.

This country was better when baseball was still America’s favorite sport. It’s the most difficult game that requires the most as far as skills. It usually also requires two parent households and mental toughness. It’s also expensive now like a country club sport. Conversely we have more single parent households and adhd that people can’t even wait a few seconds for the next pitch.

Just stick to football, I’m sure its stock will never fall…one game a week, tailgating, cheerleaders, and drama galore. Just check out this board…

MLB just set an attendance record for the 3rd straight year. That would suggest that it’s more popular than ever.

I know some people loathe the pitch clock, but it's really helped the flow of the game and made it more accessible to a lot of people. It's a lot more convenient to go when it's not a 3-4 hour event rather than a 2-3 hour game like it is now. It's hard having a 7 o'clock weekday game go until 11, when now you're out by 9:30 and home by 10-10:30.

That's what always made the basketball games at Clemson great when I was there because you knew it was going to last exactly 2 hours, so a 9pm game would be over at a reasonable hour.

partially true, but the southern schools dominate because all the good players from up north come down south to play. Because who wants to play baseball when its 10 degrees outside????

I also mean at the youth level, I've lived in the south and in the north and the weather allows for longer seasons or a spring and fall baseball season, so I think there are a lot of better players at an early age in the south.

And the old timers are the ones who make it boring. anytime a baseball player shows emotion you hear the same old lines. "PUT ONE IN HIS EARHOLE NEXT TIME!" or "BACK IN MY DAY WE HIT A HOMERUN AND RAN THE BASES WITHOUT SHOWBOATING!" If you want baseball to be popular, then let the #### kids play! Enough with the stupid "unwritten rule" crap.
