to be on top of the sports world. I hope that Clemson will never do this. There are things more important than a trophy. The manner in which you operate your program and the person who is your HC of football is crucial.

We should use all of the legitimate available resources that allow us to aggressively compete in a manner that is within the legal and acceptable practices and policies of the game.

A Superior Court Justice once told a group I was in that “legal” is the bare minimum of what is considered acceptable . Anything less than that will send you to jail. I want us to be better than a team that barely ekes out a win, especially against some of the competition we face. Lately, we haven’t even met the bare minimum. Sat was better, but how do we know? UNC is no real test!

I would be happy if Dabo would just fill areas of need with the portal.

Why do we have one of the highest paid coaching staffs then?

Why does our administration keep pushing NIL support from fans and boosters?
If we are playing a game we can’t win then perhaps we are playing the wrong game.
I don’t think we are at the disadvantage you do, I’m just making the point that if it requires cheating to win then why are we supporting the football program at a level that suggests we do intend to win?

We don’t have to cheat to win. We have to have the will and the desire to compete like we did in the championship years. We identified our lack of facilities and resources to compete with the best for elite recruits, and we funded some of the best resources in the country and ultimately, achieved our objectives.
Now, instead of facilities, we need to fund a payroll that again allows us to compete for the best players and coaches available.
And, if you need a why, just look at the ROI and the dollars that flow to the university, the town, and the state, from a successful football program that no other sport can generate.

Universities already sold everything they can, why would football be any different.

They have not sold their souls - the model under which

…Dabo built this program is gone. Under the previous model, NO ONE did it better than Dabo.
Dabo may go the way of Saban. Saban didn’t want to coach under this new business model.
These guys are NOT student athletes…PERIOD.
The previous model that Dabo coached under and the present pay-2-play model are like mixing oil and water. It ain’t happening.
To win again at the highest level, Dabo must change to this pure money model and get $30M-$40M per year to get championship quality players.

You are correct. This is no longer an amateur game. It has morphed into an early pro model with paid players. And that model, whether we wish to admit it or not, comes with lots of criticism and high expectations. In 1974, the face value of a Georgia/Clemson ticket was $7. Factor in inflation and that ticket today sells for multiples of the original. This puts the game out of reach for many loyalists and leaves you with the money crowd. They in turn demand money results. And the sad part is this is only the beginning.

Indeed - this is only the beginning - for the size of these player contracts

…I fully expect that the colleges (h311, saying that word in this context gives me acid reflux) will have to run their own version of an “NFL Combine” before extending a multi-million dollar contract.
High school players are already forced into agency and negotiations before they are legally allow to drink alcohol. Heck, they won’t even be able to legally celebrate their signed contracts with a drink. Let’s hope that the parents of these guys have enough fortitude to prevent a “Len Bias” celebration that ended pretty tragically. I was quite distraught over the senseless death of Len Bias. While not a Maryland fan, and could not stand Lefty, I was looking forward to seeing what Len would do in the NBA.
Maybe these mini-NFL-combines can be consolidated on a conference-by-conference basis with conferences willing to share their results between conferences to cut down on high school players, and transfer portal players, having to participate in 5 or 7 “collegiate combines”.

That is all well and good, but we don’t need to pay $11.5 mil for a scout master.

Money isn’t the issue. No, we don’t have Texas money..but don’t need to. We actually have a lot more than most schools. If you knew what we paid to some third stringers (no, not mentioning names), you would be shocked….like blown away when you compare it to their production. I’m talking about people… if they left the team …would be hardly missed on the field. It’s how we choose to allocate…..long term kids who don’t contribute much on the field but are real good kids vs. the five star we really really need to become elite again and compete against the Ohio States of the world. We don’t have enough of those kids anymore.
I can promise you when you pay your coach $1 million a month you have chosen to compete as an institution. But we still make/slow walk some decisions that limit our competitiveness and are totally self-inflicted. This is despite the fact that all the things we need to do to compete are now totally legal.

At the end of the day (CFP) only ONE team will say "That was money well $pent". Other than the team that raises the trophy, will the rest get their desired $5-35 ROA?
