Is this a racket or what????

Granddaughter was selected admission on "Summer Start" which requires chosen incoming freshmen to come in for classes this summer at $3,000 per semester hour! I don't know the normal tuition but at that rate a 90 hour degree would come out to $270,000 . What are your thoughts about this? I have a few.

I suppose this includes room and board but it's still a lot of money for the 2 classes they must take.

Might be misreading the cost? Here's the link to Clemson's site -

seems it's more like $630/hour in state and $1700 out of state?

I haven't read anything - just reporting what my daughter said the summer would cost in totality. Like I said in my edit sentence - they probably don't add in the room and board amount to the "per hour" cost for a credit hour but the money it will cost students to take those required hours is pretty steep since they have no choice if they want to be a student in the Fall.

In totality, the high end (for 2 classes) should be a total, all in, of $7,300

or so according to the official Clemson site on the program. That's tuition, housing, food, lab fees (where applicable), etc. And I'm assuming the grandchild is in-state. If not, the costs rise, maybe double even.

It is definitely a lot of money, no sugar coating it, but not sure it's a rip off based on the typical tuition for Clemson.

FYI - that calculation would be for 7 credit hours.***

as I understand it, students selected for Summer Start must complete the program in order to continue at Clemson in the Fall.

We have friends whose kids were admitted via summer start and they say it was the best thing they ever did and they were glad they did it. They got a head start on 2 or 3 classes, they get to learn their way around campus, and they got a better pick of dorms (no move-in chaos with all of the other students).

See my first reply above. Not saying it is not worth it to a student who would not be admitted otherwise, but if all those kids successfully complete the summer requirements and can be accommodated as students when the Fall semester starts, why shouldn't they have been accepted fully to begin with without adding $18,000 to the amount owed just for those 6 credit hours.

Higher education is a racket. Period. I have three degrees and could have one heckuva super car for my investments. It’s the paywall. The gatekeeper. We play the game. They benefit.

She has two choices: Start Clemson in the summer or transfer in after a year or so. I would grab the summer start spot in a second. Sounds like she needs a boost in math. She will be settled in and ahead of the rest of the freshmen class when they arrive at the end of August. Welcome to Clemson and Go Tigers!

We paid about $30K per year (after taking off a couple of scholarships) for out of state.

Yes. It’s a racket. Nothing on planet Earth has experienced more inflation than an American University education. Not diamonds, not oil, not land…….nothing.

I remember summer courses being unusually expensive when my daughter was at Clemson 2013-2017. We lived out of state at the time but she got academic scholarships that basically offset the out of state tuition. After her freshman year she decided to stay on campus and get a part time job at University Housing. She also took a couple of online classes. She had to pay the full out of state tuition for those on line classes. I don’t remember the numbers but I remember her being mad as h€ll about the cost.

That is accurate pricing for college today. And yes, it is most definitely a racket. More of a guarantee that they will have debt hanging over their head for most of their life than a leg up to achieving the American dream.

We've developed a system where banks will dole out unlimited loans to teenagers who have no idea what they want to do when they grow up. Colleges have no incentive to stop raising the cost to tuition b/c there is no shortage of money.

It is a racket. Clemson has found a way to fill many of the dorm rooms that previously sat empty during the summer at a handsome profit and they also allow students who may or may not have gotten in previously a path to Clemson. The bridge program is the same and seems to target legacies more than general applicants. Once you are in there are more rackets which cost STEM students their additional STEM money from the lottery and force students to pay fulltime tuition for summer internships that are mostly unpaid and require very little time for Clemson.

In Clemson's defense, it is every four year college, they are trying not only to survive but to make money and for places with high demand like Clemson it is successful. I love Clemson and I have two semesters left to pay for before my youngest daughter graduates and it includes the above mentioned summer internship which requires fulltime summer tuition.

I know people who have used the early entry program both successfully and not successfully, same with the bridge and I know many more who have started elsewhere, made good grades and transferred in to Clemson and graduated. In my experience transferring seems to be the least expensive and most successful route.

Good luck to your student and all the others regardless of the path they choose.

GO TIGERS!!!

My kid is in college and the cost of room and board is more than the cost of tuition.

I think that's true most places.

Summer session costs would probably be higher than spring and fall because of fewer credit hours taken but the cost of room and board don't decrease.

I'll go with racket. 35 yrs in IT and the 2nd most important class I ever took was Typing in 10th grade.
College just proves you're teachable and you can endure a drone voice for 50 mins.
Would you rather have the professor or the textbook? I'll take the latter.
