Is Paul Skenes already the best pitcher in baseball?

Got pulled on pitch count after 7 no-hit innings and 11ks today. Its the 2nd time this season hes gotten pulled without giving up a hit. He also has 70-some 100mph pitches this year which is about 70 more than any other starting pitcher in the MLB. Ridiculous....
The only thing that can stop him is his elbow.

He’s definitely up in the top 5 for sure. The pirates will start limiting his innings the farther they fall out of playoff contention. They’ve got a solid top 3 in there starting rotation, but don’t have the bats or bullpen to help carry them to be a legit threat. It will be fun watching him in the future, I hope he can stay healthy, the hype around him reminds me of Wood and Strasburg, while they had good careers, injuries definitely took a big chunk out of theres.

No. He, like all pitchers, has to prove he can pitch in a normal rotation for several seasons before he can be labeled the best. If he keeps pitching like he has been and stays healthy then he will squarely be in the conversation for best pitcher.

I don't think having a "book" on Skenes is going to help all that much. I'm a Cubs fan and I think there's definitely a gimmick to a guy like Shota Imanaga that the league is figuring out. I'm not sure anyone is going to figure Skenes out anymore than they figured out Randy Johnson.
The big question for me is whether he's durable. He has a big frame which could help, but only time will tell.

hold up to that kind of velocity year after year. Strasburg recently, and Kerry Wood from the Cubbies years ago come to mind. Elbows break down, and operations ensue, if they do not learn how to tone it down and develop other tools in the arsenal.
Spencer Strider for the Braves is another recent fireballer who is now having arm problems.

“The Bird” was the one of the best that flamed out quickly in the late eighties. Did you know he died when his clothes got tangled up in a PTO and he smothered to death?

A spit finger could stop him, especially if he doesn't have any control with it. Did you see what I done there

this year? definitely up there, but overall, its too soon to tell. Theres been a ton of young pitchers who took the league by storm, but fizzle out, become average, or become solid pitchers. Stephen Strasburg, Tim Lincecum, Masahiro Tanaka, and Jake Arietta come to mind. These MLB hitters and staffs are elite, and once they figure out his tendencies he could get roughed up a little bit. How he responds to that is what is going to determine if he is one of the elite pitchers in baseball. He clearly has the physical attributes to be an elite level MLB starter, but its too soon to crown him the best when you have guys who have consistently put together Cy Young level seasons. For example: Gerrit Cole, Madison Bumgarner, and Justin Verlander.

He's certainly in the conversation for best pitcher in baseball right now. He's been dominant, and is now the All-Star Starter as a rookie.
