Insurance -

Been reading and learning some here from you folks.

My take is auto insurance is off the chart due to many uninsured drivers.
No tickets or claims filed in 50 years and mine is high on a 11 year old Jeep with 30K miles.

I have some experience with home owners insurance.
After Hugo Allstate wanted to just pay off the car, not repair but I persisted.
Roots from a tree falling lifted up and destroyed my walk way. They refused to pay.
Roof wind damage (some shingles) was judged not covered.

Not long ago my home and all I had was lost in fire. I got out with a Clemson tee shirt and shorts, no shoes, so everything was lost. There nothing like even some Hurricane victims have to maybe recover a photo or a? Loosing not just your home but all things as to your life is depressing.

I had lived there for 22 years. The house was round, so cost more to build.
Investigators said it was caused by rodents nibbling on electric wires.

I had State Farm Insurance. The rep was a nice guy. He said something like "you and I are going to become best friends, you are going to see me a lot". Nope. He was soon hard to reach. No matter as he little power other than being friendly. You have to deal with faceless people. They gave me a quick check of $10k which I did not need, but some might. That was good if you have nothing, no clothes no food, no place to sleep.

The job of insurance is of course to pay as little as possible. I understand that.
Their job was to pay less, mine to demand more. Normal folks don't understand insurance until they must.

Hauling off the remains of my house was $57K. My insurance paid $10K, so something to think on. Clearing off a disaster costs more than you might believe.

There was not enough to replace my home, but enough to build a smaller one. I guess that is on me for not updating the policy. On the flip, folks my age tend to downsize.
Keep in mind I had no mortgage, it would be hard to rebuild if you have a mortgage.

I again have a home on my old lot. I am doing great!

State Farm refused to write a new policy in my name.

The company I use to work for had its biggest manufacturing facility burn to the ground. The insurance company came in and said that they would pay for replacing the facility. The owner of the company said that he was going to rebuild the operation in six months which nobody believed he could do it.

Rebuilding started the next day running cleanup and construction crews working seven days a week, twenty four hours a day. Needless to say the insurance company started to back peddle and didn’t want to pay the costs, so the owner, who had deep pockets, told the insurance company that he would pay for it and the insurance company could pay him back.

Sure enough the facility was built in six months and the insurance company wouldn’t pay the balance resulting in a nine year law suit. When the hammer finally came down the insurance company had to pay up something north of 500M.

The rise in premiums have more to do with the ridiculous cost of vehicles,

and the ridiculous cost of the parts to repair.

Not uncommon for an estimate to be well over 5k for simply coming into contact with Bambi. Even if you drive a cheap beater, you have to pay the higher rates in case you bump into somebody whose car has a $3500 headlight.

Now apply that same logic to housing values and replacement costs.

Just more inflation, ie, a weakening currency.

Insurance is one of those things that seems straightforward until you actually need it, and then you find out just how complicated it can be. Your experience highlights exactly why some level of regulation is necessary, especially when dealing with large companies. While it's true that insurers are businesses and want to make a profit, their job is also to make sure that people are protected when something goes wrong. But, as you've seen, they can fall short of that, leaving homeowners and drivers struggling to pick up the pieces.

One of the key reasons regulations exist is to protect consumers from being taken advantage of. Companies like Allstate or State Farm are huge corporations with a lot of power, and without rules in place, they can deny claims, underpay, or make the process of getting reimbursed incredibly difficult. Your story of Allstate refusing to repair the damage from a tree or only paying a fraction of your haul-off costs is exactly the kind of situation regulations are supposed to help with. Insurance companies are in the business of minimizing their payouts, but regulations make sure they don't go too far and leave people high and dry after a disaster.

Another reason for regulation is to make sure that insurance companies follow standardized practices. That means ensuring that everyone has access to a basic level of protection, and that companies can't just write policies with hidden terms or tricky exclusions that make it impossible to get what you're owed. Without some oversight, it’s easy for these companies to create loopholes that work in their favor rather than yours. Regulations are there to force transparency and accountability, so people know exactly what they’re signing up for, and aren’t caught off guard in the worst moments of their lives.

There’s plenty of evidence showing that after major disasters, like hurricanes or fires, insurance companies often drag their feet or try to reduce what they pay out. We saw that after Hurricane Ian in Florida, where many homeowners found themselves denied or severely underpaid for claims they thought were covered. Regulations are meant to prevent these situations, holding insurers accountable to their policyholders, especially when the stakes are so high.

In the end, while no one wants to deal with too much red tape, the rules that exist around insurance are there to protect people from being left with nothing when disaster strikes. If there weren't any regulations, companies would have even more leeway to avoid paying claims or offering adequate coverage, leaving people like you to fight an uphill battle just to rebuild their lives.

The problem with all types of insurance is that it has become such a huge industry. All of those people in the insurance industry get paid and that money comes from the policyholders. This drives up the cost of providers to cover the cost of all the people who “handle” the claims. This goes for doctors and hospitals as well as car and home repair contractors. Not real sure adding government involvement to this industry and process is going to make it any better. I’m thinking it will just further increase costs like most things the government gets involved in. Sorry - but I just don’t have much faith in government these days.

Let's say someone dropped off a 2500 HD truck at a transmission repair shop on August 15 and after 6 weeks of the work not being done a massive storm hits on September 27 and washes away the transmission repair shop along with the 2500 truck.
Who's insurance pays for the truck?
Asking for a friend...
TIA in advance.

The businesses. Protection of your friends vehicle is implied while in the businesses possession. Now it may be a loooooong time before that shops insurance company pays out. If he had comprehensive on his truck he'd be best filing a claim with his insurance, getting paid out, and having them fight the battle with the shops insurance.

For fear the policy will increase or be cancelled!

I always thought this approach or thinking was idiotic.

Saying, for minor vehicle damage maybe it is ok to bite the bullet but for personal injury or death not.

If the truck owner’s got comprehensive insurance, their policy’s probably stepping in, because it covers all the fun stuff like storms and floods—even when your truck’s lounging at the repair shop. But the shop should have garage-keepers insurance to cover stuff like this too. If not, well, they better get ready to offer a lifetime of free oil changes! Either way, someone’s insurance is taking the hit.

I have worked with many insurance companies through the years. The "largest" names out there are many times the worst when it comes to being there for their customers. State Farm & Allstate both use to be fairly decent, but have became horrible. I've seen them deny claims that were hands down legit honest claims. If they send a 3rd party adjuster, then you have a chance. However if they send their own reps out, you can bet they're going to try to get out of everything they can.
Unfortunately USAA & Progressive are getting the same way.
I will say they Travelers & Auto Owners have been really good. Even Orion180 have been better than the large companies.
I advise all to really look through your policy & even sit down with your agent to follow up on terminology you may not understand. Try to choose the lower percentage deductible for wind/hail/water. I've seen too many people with 6k or even 40k deductibles. It's truly sad for the homeowner.

I live in Cherry Grove a mile from the beach and less that 1000 feet to Hogs Inlet. The only large insurance company that is an option is Allstate and the price was around $8K. I do have a reasonable rate with a company that is not guaranteed by SC so if they go bankrupt after a large storm and I'm impacted I'm screwed. Same with my separate flood policy. I'm assuming it is only going to get more expensive and less options with the round of storms this year.
