Clemson’s football history is filled with stars. Aubrey (Buddy) Gore might be one of the brightest.
Gore’s accomplishments were extremely impressive. According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Aubrey “Buddy” Gore was Clemson’s greatest running back in the 1960s and perhaps during a 22 year period from 1956-78. Gore led the ACC in rushing in consecutive seasons, 1966-67, and was named the ACC Player of the Year as a junior, the first Tiger in history so honored.
Still an avid Clemson fan, who looks like he could still play today, Gore carried Clemson to the ACC Championship in 1966 and 1967. His most celebrated performance came in his last game as a junior, at South Carolina. All Gore did was rush for 189 yards in 31 tough carries, leading Clemson to a 23-12 victory. In addition to leading Clemson to the win over its arch rival, a win that gave Clemson the conference crown, he set the ACC single season rushing record and became Clemson’s first 1000-yard rusher in the process. He ended the season with 1045 yards in just 10 games.
Gore also led the ACC in rushing in 1966 when he gained 750 yards. Twice he finished in the top 20 in the nation in rushing, including a number-eight ranking in 1967. That number-eight ranking is still the second highest ranking by a Clemson running back in history. His senior year he accumulated 776 yards, the third straight year he led Clemson in rushing.
While Gore ranks only fourth in Clemson history in career rushing, it must be remembered that he played just three years and 30 games. In his era, freshmen were ineligible and teams played just 10 games per year. Only Terry Allen has a higher rushing yards per game average over a career, and Gore still holds the school mark for all-purpose running yardage for a career with a 109.1 figure.”

Amazing numbers. Hard to imagine 31 carries for 189 yards against the Gamechickens in 1967. Coot Killa for sure!
Another ClemsonTigers.com article added the following:
“Gore led Clemson to the ACC Championship in 1966 and 1967. In 1967, the Conway, SC native set the ACC single-season rushing record and became the Tigers’ first 1,000-yard rusher with 1,045 yards in a 10-game season. Gore still holds the Clemson record for all-purpose rushing yardage per game at 109.1.”

According to Sports-Reference.com, Gore registered the following statistics at Clemson:

- 601 Carries for 2,571 Yards (4.3 Average)
- 15 Rushing Touchdowns
- 7 Receptions for 65 Yards (9.3 Average)
- 1 Receiving Touchdown
- 0 for 1 in Passing Attempts

Of note: Buddy Gore apparently helped orchestrate a shoe scheme leading up to an important game in 1967. NC State and Clemson were each undefeated in the ACC when they met in Clemson that November. According to Clemson Sports Talk:
“In the 1960s, no major college football team wore white shoes or any color other than black.
…
In the week before the NC State game Buddy Gore and some others concocted the scheme to paint the team’s shoes orange. Legendary trainer Herman McGee found enough orange paint needed to paint all the shoes. Coach Howard did not know of the plan until game day. Since the shoes were already painted by that time, what could he do but go along! One of Howard’s assistants, Don Wade, had played for the old coach and had been a real stand-out. He was also involved in the caper. Wade commented that he and McGee obtained the paint from about nine different places. It was tough to find orange paint suitable for shoes. Tough as it was, orange paint was found to coat every pair on the roster.
When the Tigers rubbed Howard’s Rock and ran down the hill in orange jerseys, white pants, and orange shoes, the crowd erupted even more than usual. Then the game began.
Early in the third quarter, the Tigers struck. Facing a third down, eleven to go at the Pack’s 27, the Tigers needed a big play. Buddy Gore remembers it this way, according to former assistant SID Sam Blackmon, “NC State was in a defense that would provide double coverage on the wideouts and forced the linebackers to cover the man coming out of the backfield. I was not the primary receiver. After all, I only caught seven passes my entire career.”
Gore beat the State linebacker. He looked toward Jimmy Addison, the fine Tiger QB and he, according to Gore, “Looked right back at me.” Addison tossed a pass to Gore, who ran for a touchdown.
Clemson scored another touchdown on a seven-yard run by Jacky Jackson later in the third quarter. Arthur Craig booted his second PAT to give the Tigers a 14-6 lead that they never relinquished.
The fourth quarter was scoreless, and the orange shod Clemson defenders stole the glory from their white shod opponents by not allowing anything other than two wind-aided field goals. The Tigers went on to whip South Carolina the next Saturday in Columbia 23-12 to win the ACC championship with a 6-0 record.”

After his playing days, Buddy Gore began offering life insurance and annuities. He has served as President of Buddy Gore and Associate in Myrtle Beach.
Buddy Gore was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in May 2000.

South Carolina Highway 65, known as Ocean Boulevard, is a 4.71-mile-long state highway that runs from the south end at US 17 near Atlantic Beach to the north end at SC 9 in Cherry Grove Beach, going through North Myrtle Beach. SC 65 is known for the origin of the official state dance, the Carolina shag.
 
North Myrtle Beach is a city in Horry County, South Carolina, 15 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach and part of the 60 mile-long Grand Strand of Atlantic Beaches on the northeastern South Carolina coast. North Myrtle was incorporated in March of 1938 but consolidated in 1968 with Cherry Grove, Crescent, Ocean Drive, and Windy Hill beaches. It sits between Briarcliff Acres to the southwest and Little River to the northeast. There are lots of shops, bars, and restaurants. Alligator Park features swamps and reptiles with live shows. O.D. Pavillion Amusement Park offers fairground rides and snacks. And nearby McLean Park has a lake and picnic shelters. And of course you can lay in the sand, play in the sand or surf, take long walks along the beach listening to the sounds, or relax at the hotel pool.
