I joined the Military at 17 years old because I wanted to follow my 24 year old brother by serving in the military. My Father was a WW11 Veteran so I figured,I need to go in. I don't believe that President Trump was a draft dodger like yo ignorant left winged a$$holes that uphold the Dems.in trying to slowly destroying a great country.
Thank you President Trump and God speed Sir in trying to clean up the mess.

Times were different then. Rich folks like George Bush served but got in the Guard. Clinton went to England (Oxford). Things like that are true in all walks of our life. Those special guys are the exception, maybe wrong, but it has no impact on the "need". Clay refused, Elvis did not.
Kids in college were not drafted. Married men were not drafted. Women were not drafted. It was not like WW11 where one was in for the duration - just 18 months. I personally know and served with many guys who were drafted. 99% are proud to have served. The education gained there for life ahead is invaluable.
The real truth is the draft is necessary for any country at war. One can say war is not necessary, but if in one, draft is necessary. That can not be regulated by "if one agrees or not" with the current need for soldiers.

Trump just said he had imaginary bone spurs. Yeah, but if I were rich I would have possibly avoided as well. No telling. Anyway, you now get to chill out with your beautiful birds and beautiful pond. Well deserved.

Tug, spent summer of 81 between junior and senior yr at Bragg as part of ROTC training. Must have been same barracks. On June nights, literally took a cold shower, then fell in bunk without drying off in attempt to get to sleep. Some July nights I could actually sleep under blanket though...go figure.
By the way, super impressed by 82nd personnel that trained us...some E -5's even we're college grads that could have been anything.

Bragg was a traitor to the USA. Period. It's not complicated. And anyone saying otherwise is a traitor to the USA as well. It's not complicated. What don't you get? He took up arms against the USA. Treason. Stop it.

a traitor. Perhaps looking back to the Civil War from 2025 it is easy to put labels on those brave Soldiers. I can't imagine having to live through that period of American history. The majority of fighting age males from the South joined the CSA or converted from the US Army to fight. Not taking sides here, but this is a complex issue that deserves more than a single word label. Many Americans lost their lives during the Civil War. All should be respected. You don't have to like it, but it is ignorant to call any Soldier a traitor for serving.
I can say if you have never served in the military and have not served in a combat zone, you are not speaking from a position of authority or understanding.
Without searching through some of my books or hitting the Googles, I'm pretty sure all Confederate Soldiers were pardoned by President Lincoln and are not traitors to the USA.
War is not pretty. It makes people afraid-I've never met anyone who wants to die. I don't condone dodging the draft, but understand why people did.

Yeah except Congress blocked naming military installations after literal traitors against the republic four years ago. So now it’s named after PFC Roland Bragg who served this country in WW2

I did not go in the military as I was involved in the draft lottery during the Vietnam War. My draft number was 163 and they stopped drafting at 150 as they had their quota.

Folks posting here have no idea as to the prospect of being drafted and how it effects one's life. Guys were marring ugly girls. Guys were 'running off to Canada or Oxford. With $ one might get into the Guard.
How kids now would react cannot not be predicted.

Over half the people you know or associate with supported him enough to vote for him.

the draft for 18 months? Was a minimum of 24 full months in 1969 - seems like they figured you would get a maximum of one year in the States and a minimum of one full year overseas. When it was clear that I was getting close to a full year in the States , I had to extend my 24 month obligation by one month in order to fit the month-long Airborne Training in and I would still have a whole year in Vietnam.

On day one signed up for Airborne as I was young and crazy. I requested it again a year later. When I was courted to re-enlist they finally gave me a date to do that, but too late as I was in love and needed to go home.

Several of us in the NCO School at Benning decided to sign up together. If we had any cowardly side to us, it was that we delayed going to Vietnam , that was one more month that more VC would be taken out who could have potentially done the same to us. Sure enough- the Army Times(?) published KIA soldiers in each issue and we saw some guys who trained with us names on the list that didn’t make it through that one month.

Folks posting on this thread with "authority" have no clue. Their friends and family were not listed in the daily count as our friends and family died.
58,220 is the official count of "killed" but expand that many times to those who were injured for life. Years later many died early due to things like agent orange. War is hell, and it is the kids who are called on to go to battle.
Teenagers in my day were scared sh-less of being drafted, and for good reason.
