final day of ACC track championships is going to be good

live stream: (starts at 5:30) https://www.espn.com/watch/catalog/74d54e57-c7e6-38fd-9fe8-b98414ad0ea9/ncaa-track-field#bucketId=6

live results: https://flashresults.com/2025_Meets/Outdoor/05-15_ACC/index.htm

Most field events have already wrapped up, with a few still in progress. But the bulk of the track finals gets underway at 5:30 PM. On the women's side, the competition could hardly be tighter. We remember how the Tigers ended up winning Indoors by a pretty comfortable margin in the end this year. It's going to be a much different story today. Clemson were the favorites to win coming in, but Duke was expected to be right there with them. But after the first 2 days of competition, 2 other teams have vaulted themselves squarely into the title race. Combining the results that are already in with projected finishes for the rest of them based on seed times, my current projected finish for the women looks like this:

1. 93.5 Louisville
2. 89.0 Virginia
3. 88.0 Clemson
4. 78.0 Duke

After that, there's a significant drop off, so I don't think any other teams are going to be in the mix for the team championship. But among that group of 4, it's as close as can be and looks like anybody's title to claim.

The Tigers are still in great position to contend, but they're not going to run away with it like they did at Indoors. This is gonna be a nailbiter that ought to come right down to the end and make for a great watch.

On the men's side, the Tigers are not realistic contenders for the team title this year. They're still in the midst of a rebuild right now. But there are a few individuals who should have good chances to win a championship. I'll try to provide some updates.

A few hours ago, she became the 1st individual champ for the Tigers at this meet, winning the triple jump in convincing fashion as expected. Winning jump of 44 ft 4.25 in for the All-American.

Tigers finish 2nd in the 4x100

in 43.39. Florida State takes the win and sets a meet record. Clemson's lineup went Oneka Wilson, Aniyah Kitt, McKenzie Calloway, Sade Gray. Note the absence of Aleksandra Stoilova. She uncharacteristically failed to make the final in the 100 as the fastest woman in the conference coming in, so I'm guessing she may be dealing with some sort of injury. She wasn't even entered for the 200, and her last 100 time prior to this meet had been unusually slow, so that would track. So without her, and with FSU running that well, I'll take 2nd there.

BIG finish in the 1500 by Jelelgo!

She takes 2nd in a PB of 4:11.61. Brynne Sumner snags 7th in 4:14.91, also a PB. That's 10 points for Clemson, a massive overperformance, and a much-needed one. I thought we might be in trouble after Chepngetich and Kosgei failed to qualify, but that should be nullified now.

Updated projections:
1. 95 Louisville
2. 95 Clemson
3. 90 Virginia
4. 76 Duke

Oneka Wilson does it again

As expected, Wilson wins the 100 hurdles, taking it in 13:07. She has absolutely owned the ACC in the short hurdles over her career. Rollins does take 2nd for Virginia though, picking up 8 key points.

The Indoor champ won't be able to repeat, but he still has a great performance, equaling his PB of 6 ft 10.25 in

Also, the men got 2md in the 4x100 in a season's best 39.24, also behind Florida State. The Johnson twins ran very well. Kevin Collins was also on the relay, and I believe Oyetunji was as well.

Shanque Williams is only able to take 4th in the 400

It's a lot to ask of a freshman, but she did have the best time coming in. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to outsprint the other challengers on the last stretch, and in fairness, all 3 of them PR'd. When it's this tight, you need every point you can get. That was a 52.69 there for Shanque.

Updated projections:

1. 95 Louisville
2. 93 Virginia
3. 90 Clemson
4. 76 Duke

Micahi Danzy, a freshman, just won the men's 400 in a time of 44.38, breaking the ACC record of 44.55 set by VT's Judson Lincoln (who's injured this year) in 2024. Danzy also plays wide receiver for FSU. This kid is legit, at least as far as track is concerned.

BIG performance by star freshman Aniyah Kitt

She takes 2nd in the 100 in a season best 11.10. Shenese Walker wins for Florida State in 10.99. But that's a crucial performance there by Kitt to get those 8 points. Yeast only manages 3rd for Louisville.

still close as can be in the new projection:

1. 93 Virginia
2. 91 Louisville
3. 90 Clemson
4. 76 Duke

Well, the good news is, Gladys Chepngetich wins the 800 against an absolutely loaded field, the best in the whole meet in my opinion. She takes down Makayla Paige and Roisin Willis to do it in a meet record time of 1:59.94. Absolutely incredible. Clemson gets 11 points there.

But the bad news is, JodyAnn Dixon tripped over a hurdle in the 400 hurdles, resulting in her finishing last, only getting 1 point. And Aniyah Kitt couldn't do it all herself. Despite a SB of 22.91, she ends up having to settle for 4th in the 200, getting narrowly swallowed up by a big group at the end. The top 6 in the final all set SB's. Sade Gray takes 7th, so Clemson only gets 7 points there. As expected, Louisville gets a boatload of points in the discus behind their Olympian and collegiate record holder Jayden Ulrich.

So here are my updated projections:

1. 95 Virginia
2. 89 Louisville
3. 82 Clemson
4. 72 Duke

The Tigers may not be out of it yet. Silvia Jelelgo takes 3rd in the 5000 with a big PB of 15:33.32 to pick up 6 critical points for the Tigers. A major overperformance. She's been massive for Clemson this weekend.

new projection:

1. 91 Virginia
2. 89 Louisville
3. 85 Clemson
4. 72 Duke

80 Clemson

everyone else is more than ten points back of Clemson. All events now final except the 4x400.

Here's where it gets interesting. Here are the seed projections for the 4x400:

Virginia: 1 point
Louisville: 0 points
Clemson: 5 points

So the best Clemson could do would be tie UVA with a win. But Louisville's 4x400 team stinks, and Virginia's is a fringe scoring candidate. If someone could slip in front of the 'Hoos, that would at least open the door for Clemson to tie with an incredible win. Not likely, but not out of the realm of possibility. The Tigers don't have the dominant 4x400 team they used to, but they're certainly the best of the 3 teams at the top.

Also want to mention a relatively unexpected surprise for the men: The Johnson twins, both freshmen, sweep the men's 200! Jalen wins it in a PB 20.36, Ian gets 2nd with a PB 20.52. They were both expected to be in the mix here, but not this good. That gives the men's team a massive shot in the arm. The future could look real bright if these 2 stick around. The men are up to 6th now with 67 points.

The Tigers give it a real ride, going Dixon, Williams, Gray, and Chepngetich. They had the lead for a significant portion of the race, and were right there at the front the whole way. They ran a season best 3:29.69. But ultimately, Duke and Miami were just a little bit better. Tigers finish 3rd in the event, and the meet. Virginia got 6th in the 4x400 as well, so it wouldn't have mattered in the end.
Final results:
1. 93 Virginia
2. 89 Louisville
3. 86 Clemson
4. 73 Florida State
etc...

we've got an interesting battle at the end here. UNC, Duke, and Cal are neck-and-neck at 82, 80, and 79.83, respectively going into the fast section of the 4x400. Clemson in this heat, too...

...EVER. They get 3rd in the 4x400. The 1st UNC runner pulled his hamstring, so it ended up being pretty anticlimactic in the end. He tried to fight through it, but they were just way too far back. Cal also finished 9th in the relay, so they weren't able to top Duke, either. Clemson was 6th in the event. The male Tigers will also finish 6th overall in the meet with 70 points.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was also the 1st team title for the Virginia women.

To put a bow on it, the men weren't contenders, but they certainly outperformed expectations getting 6th, so that was encouraging for the young team. Seeing the Johnson twins sweep the 200 was awesome. Can't wait to see what they do next.

On the women's side, what a meet. It really did come down to the wire, with Virginia, Louisville, and Clemson all within 6 points of each other, neck-and-neck the whole way. The Tigers certainly didn't have their best overall meet, but they showed a heck of a fight at the end to try to pull their way back into it, with several athletes completely outperforming expectations to keep the team afloat. And that was very inspiring to see.

Unfortunately, I think we're going to look back on the Stoilova injury and the failure of Kosgei to qualify in the 800 or the 1500 as the big shortcomings that ultimately doomed Clemson's championship hopes today. They were 2 of the biggest pieces in the Indoor title. In a different year, the Tigers might've been able to get away with those things, but with the competition as good and as tight as it ended up being today, that ended up being a little too much to overcome, despite some heroic efforts from some of the other athletes.

Well, there you have it. The men finish 6th, the women in 3rd, at the 2025 ACC Outdoor Championships in Winston-Salem.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for all of the updates...both the men and women represented Clemson well!
